Students rallying for smoke-free beaches
GRAND BEND — One hundred and ten youths from
across southwestern Ontario will hit the beach in
Grand Bend Thursday to raise awareness of the
benefits of smoke-free beaches.
The Huron County group, `Rebels with a Cause,' is
excited to take part.
"We want people to be aware of the effects that lit-
tering cigarette butts has on the environment," says
`Rebels with a Cause' peer leader Jessica Johnston.
She goes on to say, "It takes up to 12 years for a
cigarette to decompose. Discarded butts are
creating one of the world's greatest environ-
mental problems."
Over 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are littered
worldwide each year.
`Rebels with a Cause' is a group of 10 youths
employed by the Huron County Health Unit as part of
the Youth Action Affiance initiative of a Smoke Free
Ontario. Its aim is to prevent smoking in youth and to
expose how the tobacco industry directly targets youth
to use their products.
"It's really great that 110 youths can get together for
such a worthwhile cause," says `Rebels with a
Cause' peer leader Abby Feagan. "With
Grand Bend's popularity, combined with
our cool activities, we're hoping that lots
of people will leave more educated
about the benefits of having smoke-free
beaches."
The "Smoke -Free Beaches: No Ifs Ands or
Butts" event will start at noon at the Grand
Bend Main Beach with activities such
as sand sculpting, a Tiki Hut speak-
er's corner, relay races and a display
of tombstones representing the num-
_ ber of people who die in Ontario
from tobacco each day.
One hundred and ten peer leaders dressed in white
suits covered in tobacco messaging from across south-
western Ontario will be asking people to sign a state-
ment of support for smoke-free beaches.
