Sixteen districts of men and women competed for the right to advance to the Canadian championships in Sarnia Aug. 5-10. The format is a double knock- out over the two days with the gold and silver winners advanc- ing. Exeter's 2006 silver medalists in this senior event were trying to defend their title. Skip Peter McFalls, second Colin McLuckie and lead Bruce Marshall started the tourna- ment with a loss to district 13 Richmond Hiill, meaning the remaining games must be won or Exeter would be eliminated. Game two was against Milton bowlers from district 9, which Exeter handled by a score of 17-8. Game three was a tight one with the Exeter trio pulling it off in the final end by scoring three to win 12-10. The numbers are in the top five of the IHRA history and top the previous Grand Bend high of 39,000 from 2004. Several records were bro- ken over the weekend including Brian Gahm, of Lucasville, Ohio, whose 6.299 pass at 220 miles per hour was the quickest Pro Stock pass in recorded his- tory and made Gahm the first member of the Jerry Haas Race Cars 6.20s Club. "I like getting some of my money back from Haas," said Gahm, who drives a Jerry Haas -built 2007 Mustang with Jon Kaase power. "This is a brand new race car and it doesn't get any better than that. I'm tickled to death. We contemplated what to do with the trans- mission and Cliff made the right call. He said tonight would have the best condi- tions of the weekend and we went for it." As he approached the end of the track Gahm won- dered if his car was going to stay together. "When I hit the high gear the thing was flat carrying the mail," he said. "When I got to the high side it was banging around and I thought the engine was coming apart. When they first told me I thought I heard them say a 6.39 because it was banging around so much. We were shooting for a 6.32 and would have been happy with that, but everything came together with the weather and it was a heck of a run. "I have such a great crew that always puts me in posi- tion to do the best I can." • Giddy up — Several riders competed in various events Sunday during the Exeter Saddle Club show.Above, the youngest member of the group, seven-year-old Steven McComb rides "Batman" while compet- ing in the Keyhole category.
