complaints
HURON — The Huron OPP are
receiving numerous complaints of
loose dogs in Huron County and are
cautioning dog owners that
charges could be laid against any
dog owner if;
• a dog has bitten or attacked;
• a dog has behaved in a manner
that poses a menace to the safety of
persons or domestic animals, or:
• where the dog owner did not
exercise reasonable steps to pre-
vent a dog from doing any of the
above.
The owner of the dog is liable for
damages resulting from a bite or
attack by the dog on another per-
son or domestic animal
If the court finds the dog has bit-
ten or attacked a person or domes-
tic animal and the court is satisfied
that an order is necessary for the
protection of the public, the court
may order:
• the dog to be destroyed in the
manner specified in the order;
• the owner of the dog take mea-
sures for the more effective control
of the dog like;
• confining the dog to its owner's
property
• restraining the dog by means of
a leash;
• muzzling the dog while off the
owner's property;
• posting warning signs;
• the owner be prohibited from
owning another dog during a speci-
fied period of time.
No person shall allow and/or per-
mit a dog to run at large or trespass
on private property, and any found
not under the control of any person
by means of a leash could be

Province
announces
funding for
"Just Try It"
program
HURON — The McGuinty govern-
ment is providing $7,500 to the
Huron County Health Unit for their
"Just Try It" program through the
2007-08 Communities in Action
Fund (CIAF) to increase physical
activity and sport participation
rates in Huron County
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell
made the funding announcement
Monday on behalf of Minister of
Health Promotion Jim Watson.
The program, a joint venture
between the Huron County Health
Unit, South Iluron District I-Iigh
School, the Municipality of South
Huron Recreation Department and
and the local Take Heart Huron
Program, is designed to reduce
barriers to physical activities
through four phases.
"Just Try It" will be developed as
a holistic and universal program
that will blend sport and recre-
ation programs to meet the needs
and interest of youth in the
Municipality of South Huron.
"CIAF grants are making it easier
for residents in this community to
become more active," said
Mitchell.
"These grants will provide new
and enhanced sport, recreation
and physical activity programs that
will improve the health and fitness
of local families."
"We are very excited about the
project and this funding announce-
ment through the Ontario govern-
ment will help us move it for-
ward," said health unit executive
director Penny Nelligan.
"This program will help fulfill
two needs in Huron County — cur-
tailing the expanding rate of child
obesity and filling the need for
recreational activity available to
youth in the area."
The Communities In Action Fund,
now in its fourth year is a $5 mil-
lion program that has awarded
more than $16 million to approxi-
mately 548 organizations at the
local and provincial levels and has
benefited approximately one mil-
lion people.
In March 2007, the Ontario gov-
ernment announced that the
provincial budget will allocate an
additional $2.5
million — for a
total of $7.5 mil-
lion — to the
2007-2008 fund.
