EXETER !IONS
Lions donate —The $ 1.6 million South Huron Hospital fundraising campaign is now up to $871,000 thanks to a recent $35,000 donation from the Exeter Lions
Club. From left are Lions Don Thompson, John Stephens, Larry Eveland and Paul Scott and George Godbolt,Tom Prout and Bob Gehan from the Campaign Team.
Lions have a history of support
In 1947 with considerable
money in its coffers from the
success of a monster carni-
val, the Exeter Lions dis-
cussed the possibility of
building a hospital.
At an executive meeting,
the president was instructed
to investigate the building of
a medical facility.
The first of hundreds of
meetings was held in
November 1947 when the
committee met to discuss a
hospital project. They investi-
gated all the angles of such
an undertaking (size, cost of
build, grants available, etc.)
They even looked at the
problem of meeting an oper-
ating deficit once the hospital
was erected.
In March 1949, $1,000 was
allotted by the Lions to obtain
plans and promote a cam-
paign to raise these funds.
In August tentative plans
for a new hospital were
released; two weeks later the
South Huron Hospital
Association was organized
with many Lions on this com-
mittee.
A campaign was launched
to raise $200,000. The next
few years the efforts of the
club were centered on the
new hospital.
In 1951 the Carling proper-
ty was purchased for the
location for the construction.
In 1952 the Lions donated
$10,000 raised from the sale
of tickets on a "Dream

Home" that was built in
Grand Bend.
The culmination of the
effort of the Lions Club
resulted in the South Huron
Hospital being erected and
officially opened in 1953.
The Exeter Lions Club was
chartered in 1937 and this
year will be celebrating its
70th anniversary. This is
truly a milestone in commu-
nity events.
Everyone knows all these
years the club has been there
for many causes: parks,
trails, pools, tennis courts,
schools, health care, eye and
sight awareness, children's
needs and our hospital.
Again the Exeter Lions Club
steps up for the hospital!
Outstanding report
By Debra Hunt
SOUTH HURON HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT/CEO
On July 18 the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care
came to South Huron Hospital's X-ray Department to
complete a thorough safety inspection.
All aspects of the department were carefully reviewed
including staff competency, patient safety precautions,
the equipment, policies and processes. The department is
held to the same standards as all hospitals in Ontario.
I am delighted to report that SHHA received an out-
standing report with no deficiencies or recommendations.
The surveyor was very impressed with the new equip-
ment and the installation of the PACS system. She stated
that the staff and equipment are second to none and are
impressive. She was pleased to note that SHHA is in part-
nership with South Western Ontario Digital Imaging
Project — a project which could not have happened with-
out your donations to our x-ray project.
Our equipment and processes are excellent as identified
in the report, but more important is the quality of care
our imaging technologists provide. This team of six high-
ly -trained technologists is one of the most caring, compe-
tent teams I have had the pleasure of working with. Each
patient is a top priority to them- whether it be a small
child or an elderly patient. They always place the patients
foremost in their plans and care. This small team covers
the ER department, in-patient department as well as
patients from the communities we serve 24 hours a day
everyday. Together they have provided the equivalent of
90 years service to SHHA plus many years at other hospi-
tals. The radiologists are also an intricate part of the
team and the London St. Joseph's Radiology group pro-
vides excellent radiology support. With the installation of
PACS, the x-ray reports are often available to the physi-
cians the same day of the x-ray.
Congratulations to the team for a job well done! Thank
you for your on-going donations to ensure SHHA remains
a strong rural hospital.
New equipment —With the new "zamboni" and cart/microfiber sys-
tem are housekeeping staffVicki Geoffery and Lois Jones.
Staff f j`'trained on equipment
The housekeeping staff here
at South Huron Hospital has
over 120 combined years of
experience in keeping this one
of the cleanest hospitals.
In keeping with new technolo-
gy and products, as well as the
health and well-being of our
staff, we have recently switched
to a new microfiber cleaning
system.
This system is ergonomically,
economically and environmen-
tally friendly.
The microfiber is very effec-
tive in cleaning and picking up
deep down dirt. It is reusable
and laundered on site. The wet
and dry mops are lightweight
and all cleaning products are
safe for the environment.
You may have seen the new
"zamboni" being steered down
the halls. This is the new auto -
scrubber for the floor which
cleans, squeegees and buffs as
it is self propelled down the
hall. Steering is required!
The housekeeping staff: Lois
Jones, Vicki Geoffery, Charlotte
Elliott, Joyce Masse, Deb
Meidinger and Diane Skinner
have completed testing and are
waiting for certification from
the School of Sanitation.
South Huron Hospital is keep-
ing up with technology, equip-
ment and products to provide a
safe environment for staff,
patients and community as well
as meeting infection control
standards.
South Huron Hospital has staff
that takes pride in their work
and truly cares about their hos-
pital and community.
