(pho- tos/Scott Nixon) "Miss Saigon" a Playhouse triumph By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND — You don't have to like musicals to love "Miss Saigon." The legendary musical set in war -rav- aged Vietnam opened to an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd last week at the Huron Country Playhouse. With its set designs, numerous scene changes, music, choreography and drama, "Miss Saigon" might be the most complex and ambitious production the Playhouse has ever put on. It also might be the best. Director and choreogra- pher David Connolly has met and exceeded the best. Juatco in particular does an excellent job, her voice of innocence quickly win- ning over the audience's sympathy. But it isn't just the lead actors who make "Miss Saigon" shine. The support- ing cast is excellent and all the perfor- mances are strong. Anthony Malarky plays an effective villain and represents one of the many challenges Kim meets in her life. "Miss Saigon" might be the most complex and ambitious production the Playhouse has ever put on. It also might be the best. challenge of producing an emotional, entertaining and at times heart -wrench- ing musical telling the love story of Kim, a young Vietnamese orphan -turned pros- titute, who meets American G.I. Chris. The two immediately fall in love, but they meet insurmountable challenges as the U.S. Army leaves Vietnam during the fall of Saigon and Chris returns home to the U.S. to start a new life while Kim remains in Saigon in poverty, still in love with her American soldier and waiting for him to rescue her. Several performances stand out, notably former "Canadian Idol" finalist Elena Juatco as Kim, Stephen Patterson as Chris and Franc -Anton Harwart as "The Engineer," a scoundrel who keeps the audience laughing even though his inten- tions are questionable at As an ensemble, the cast is impressive — there were no noticeable flubbed lines and songs were met with applause and shouts of approval throughout the performance. Another strong element adding to the effectiveness of the musical is the live orchestra, led by conductor Charles Cozens. The set design was also excellent, with scene changes nearly seamless. Without giving the ending away, it's not what the audience expects. "Miss Saigon," moves along at a quick pace and keeps the audience's attention. It manages to present the roller -coaster relationship Kim and Chris go through without falling into the trap many pro- ductions do — that of being overly long. Written by the creators of "Les Miserables," as an updated treatment of "Madame Butterfly," "Miss Saigon" might be Huron Country Playhouse's greatest achievement. The production runs until Aug. 4. The Playhouse announced before last week's opening that 10,000 tickets had already been sold.
