Orno Adair of the Dashwood -based compa- ny presented drawings for the new three- storey building to South Huron councillors and Senior Housing committee members George Robertson and Pete Armstrong Friday afternoon. Construction is slated to start in October or November with a com- pletion date of November 2008. As reported, the seniors' building will be constructed beside the Exeter Fire Hall at the corner of William and Nelson Streets. McCann and South Huron have units will be 919 square feet. A couple of the units will be fully wheelchair -accessible. Prices for rent haven't been determined yet. Adair said the building will be made out of concrete. The outside will feature bricks with possibly stonework at the bottom of the walls, with something around the windows to make them stand out. "We're going to dress it up," Adair said of the building. All units will be air conditioned and will include appliances. Robertson said the new building will be a big improvement for the municipality because it will free up housing in town. reached a deal for McCann to buy the property from the municipali- ty. (That figure wasn't available as the Times - Advocate was going to press, but the land had to be sold at an appraised price under the Municipal Act). The building will feature one- and two-bed- room units. The building will have an eleva- tor, there will be controlled entry and each apartment will have its own thermostat and balcony. There will also be a common room (including a kitchen) for parties and meetings and a lobby with a sitting area. There will also be a separate area for those moving so they don't have to go through the lobby. Outside will feature green space with a gazebo and a patio area with a barbecue. Square footage is still approximate, but Adair said the one -bedroom apartments will be 658 square feet, while the two-bedroom Robertson said the new build- ing will be a big improvement for the municipality because it will free up housing in town. "It's going to be a good thing all around," he said, adding the location is ideal because it's "smack in the middle of every- thing." Adair said the new seniors' building is a first for McCann. He said the company felt there was a need for the project and McCann was looking for something to keep its employees busy in the winter. "We're really looking forward to moving ahead," he said, adding the company has already received phone calls from those inter- ested in the apartments. He said McCann will make a list of those interested as they call. "It's guaranteed you'll see this place fill up and you'll need another one," Robertson said. Adair said the design of the building is now set and McCann is working on the electrical and mechanical engineering aspect of the project. A public meeting on the rezoning of the property will be held July 30 at the Olde Town Hall in Exeter at 7:30 p.m. Merner's Meats making sausage again By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF DASHWOOD — "We have everything we had before, but it's a different scale," says Ron Merner, co-owner of Merner's Meats with wife Ruthann, which held a grand re -opening last week at 70963 Bronson Line, south of Dashwood. Merner's had been in busi- ness for around 45 years before closing five years ago. Merner's is a full service abattoir offering wholesale meats and custom processing as well as a retail store. Merner said the building has been upgraded with a new floor as well as a stain- less steel smoke house and doors. The business will have the same product line as before and Ron says it will continue to specialize in Dashwood sausage. While it varies by sea- son, Ron said Merner's Meats might process more beef than pork. Overseeing the meat processing for Merner Meats and South -west- ern Ontario is Jean Lavictoire, who is the area manager for Southwestern Ontario food inspections. Ron added that once a year, there is an audit done of Merner's whole process by an inspector who is hired by but doesn't work for the gov- ernment.
