The major on -ice compo- nents of the seminar are freestyle, spins, footwork, edges, stroking and skills with off -ice events including conditioning, improvisation and lectures. Taking part in the seminar were skaters Rachel Watson, Kirsten Brintnell, Kathleen Gregus and coach Kathy McLlwain. Each day was seven to eight hours with four hours of on -ice instruction and three hours of off -ice by national and international coaches and athletes. On ice sessions consisted of footwork, edges, freeskate, artistic, skating techniques and spins. Off ice included 'mind to muscle' strength and condi- tioning designed to improve skaters' performance by increasing power, core sta- bility, balance and endurance. Over 100 skaters from all over the world took part in the Mariposa Seminar. There are also parent meetings and coaches lec- tures and McLlwain said it is an opportunity for any skater working to achieve their goals and excel in the sport. Sledge folds HENSALL — The Huron Sledge Hockey and Ice Picking Club will no longer offer their hockey pro- gram for people who are physi- cally challenged. Due to declining registration numbers it is no longer feasible to continue the program, organizers say. The club has provided an opportunity for physically chal- lenged individuals of all ages to participate in the game of hockey since 1995. At its peak the club provided physical activity for 20 or more members and participated in numerous sledge hockey tourna- ments throughout the province. The club claimed the Novice Division championship at an international tournament in Kitchener hi 1999. Many players have advanced to more competitive teams in Sarnia, Windsor, London and Kitchener. Several players also participated in the Ontario Paralympic Winter Games in Huntsville in 2006. Decline in player registration has been primarily due to mem- bers relocating to further their education at college's and univer- sitys. The Huron Sledge Hockey and Ice Picking Club thanks all of its sponsors over the years for their support with the program. Fury lose 3-0 EXETER — The Exeter Fury had their season opening seven game unbeaten streak snapped July 11 with a 3-0 loss to the first place St. Marys squad. The game started with even play between the two teams but St. Marys got the first break when a long shot was deflected off the foot of a Fury defender catching keep- er Ryan Masse out of position. The home team seemed deflated by the bad luck and shortly after- ward fell behind 2-0 on a well- placed shot to the corner. Just before the half Fury mid- fielder Joe Forrester left the game with a deep gash in his head after banging heads with a St. Marys player. The Fury deficit increased to three when a scramble in the box resulted in a turnover which St. Mary's capitalized on firing a ball past Masse for a 3-0 at the half. Exeter started the second half well and put more pressure on the St. Mary's defense but the Fury were unable to finish their few chances. The Fury lost leading scorer Craig Docking for a month due to an ankle injury sustained late in the second half adding to the team's misery on the night. The Fury have a record of 5-1-2 and sit in third place in the East division. The next action for Exeter is Friday night in Arkona against Taxandria.
