Hand -carving hobby — Exeter resident Lloyd Otterbein finished his most recent wood-
working creation last month, a hand carved 20 -mule team. Mules are used to move borax
out of the dessert. Otterbein has mastered the hand carvings over the years, making several
other projects featuring a 50 -team horse hitch in 1995, which took a year to create and
now sits in the Mayan General Store. Otterbein also created five "Last Suppers," which can
be found in various churches and living rooms in the area. Otterbein's dad Edmond began
this generational hobby, starting in the 1 800s. Otterbein has done wood hand carvings since
about 1946. His son Wayne, above, who is a proprietor of Otterbein's Barbershop in Exeter
also does carvings, but instead focuses on leather carvings. (photo/Nina Van Lieshout)

Update from South Huron mayor
SOUTH HURON — A motion
July 4 was presented to Huron
County council by the Planning,
Agriculture and Public Works
Committee that read, "That a
subcommittee be established to
develop a Tourism Signage
Proposal for 2008 that would
include the Highways
Department, the Planning
Department, and two members of
Council."
If successful, the existing blue
tourism signs along Huron
County highways might be
replaced by modern signage that
promotes attractions in
Huron County as well as
the county itself.
The existing signs are
called `TODS' signs and is
short for Tourism
Oriented Directional
Signage. This is a private
company set up to pro-
vide tourism signage
along provincial high-
ways. Some counties also
have contracts with this
company to provide tourism signs
on their roads. Huron County is
one of the counties that has a
contract with this company.
People who wish to buy advertis-
ing on these roads must use this
company for promotional sig-
nage. These signs will have a
standard design and will be kept
in good condition. Great idea.
While I have noticed these signs
meet the specifications with
regard to being maintained
around the cities and the
Highway 401 corridor, some of
the signs in South Huron are
sadly lacking attention. I under-
stand complaints have been reg-
istered with the company and lit-
tle seems to be done.
These signs have a large
Ontario name with a symbol on
the top portion of the sign. On a
lot of the signs in our area, this
top part with the name of Ontario
is peeling or faded so bad it is
hard to read. A sign east of
Exeter on County Road
83 is so rotten that there
are parts of it missing
and holes in what is left.
Farther east I am told a
sign is lying in the ditch.
For a county that pro-
motes tourism, it's about
time some action is
taken about the tourism
signage on the county
roads. What does a
tourist think when they
are driving through South Huron
and they see some of these
tourism signs that are lacking
attention? Not only does it look
bad for the county, it is not giving
a fair break to the lower -tiered
municipalities.
Let's hope Huron County will
assess this situation and come up
with a solution we can all be
proud of.
