HENSALL — Huron County has
again opened its heart to chil-
dren from the other side of the
world with the arrival of 10 chil-

Chernobyl explosion.
It is the tenth year for the
Children of Chernobyl and the
decade was celebrated on
Saturday with dinner and enter-
tainment at the Hensall arena.
The children are accompanied
by interpreter Olga Kurbatova

It is the first year for
Singaevskaya, Teresh, and

Artsiomenko, have made the trip
almost every year.
Kurbatova, who is doing her
first year as an interpreter, said
the group has gatherings every
week and has seen several of the
sights in Southern Ontario
including Canada's Wonderland,
Medieval Times, the African Lion
Safari and a performance of
"Oklahoma."

Planning issues keep council agenda busy
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — The municipality's plan-
ning department has been busy recently with
a number of issues discussed at South
Huron's July 9 council meeting.
Council approved a minor variance to
James Eveleigh's property at 163 Andrew
Street in Exeter to allow an addition onto the
existing house. The minor variance was
required to reduce the minimum side yard
requirement from 2.8 metres from the
southerly lot line to one metre.
Planner Claire Dodds explained in her
report to council that Eveleigh's lot is "long
and narrow," making it difficult for him to
enlarge his home without obtaining a vari-
ance. Dodds said the minor variance was
minor, conforms with the municipality's
Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw and repre-
sents appropriate planning for the site.
Council approved the minor variance on a
recommendation from Dodds. The approval
contains a condition that the construction on
the house conform to sketches already sub-
mitted in the application.
Also discussed at the July 9 council meet-
ing was that Eveleigh started work on his
addition without having the necessary build-
ing permit or minor variance.
"During my site inspection of the property
on June 24, 2007, it was obvious that the
applicant has already poured the foundation
for the addition on the front and on the south
side of the dwelling," Dodds' report reads.
"The chief building official placed a stop
work order on the property on June 24,
2007. At my site visit on July 5, 2007, it was
obvious that the applicant has continued to
build on the site and has now framed the
walls, despite a stop work order being
issued."
Dodds went on to explain that the chief
