He is the son of Hub and Mary Thiel of R.R.3 Zurich. The couple are planning to be mar- ried in September. Marg Johnston is a new resident at the Bluewater Rest Home in Zurich. Congratulations to Eugene and Shirley O'Brien, Zurich who cel- ebrated their 50th wed- ding anniversary with an open house at the club house at Stone Meadows subdivision. The actual date of their anniversary was June 29. A house warming party and pig roast were enjoyed by several friends and relatives on Sat., June 30 at the home of Tim Klopp; Steve Eilers; Matt Groot and Steve Masse who live at R.R.2 Zurich; farm of farmers Glen and Donna Thiel who have moved to the Bluewater area and Diane Klopp will be living in the Thiel's house. A delicious fundraising dinner along with silent auction and penny sale was held at the Zurich Mennonite Church fel- lowship hall Fri., June 29 for Leeanne Bechard's trip to Guatemala with the Enlace team of Mennonite Central Committee from July 23 to Aug. 24. She will be in a group of nine people travelling to various places for five weeks working alongside Guatemalan partners. Leeanne lives with Bob and Linda Hendrick in Zurich. We wish them all a safe trip! Paul and Cathy Steckle along with their grand- daughter Valerie enjoyed spending Canada Day in Ottawa on Parliament Hill. A delicious BBQ meal and social afternoon (fol- lowing golf at the Bayview) was held at the home of Mike and Kim Ryckman in Dashwood on July 1 for the annual staff party on Canada Day. The Lions Club held its last meeting for the sum- mer months on June 27 with dinner at Erb's Country Kitchen along with their wives. Members will still be busy working at the Zurich Fair July 27, 28, and 29, also at the Bean Festival on Aug. 25. May we offer a speedy recovery to Arlene Seyler who fell recently and broke her foot. The Scouts and leaders prepared a spaghetti supper for their families on June 18 for their end -of-the-year Fly -up cere- mony. Recent visitors from Toronto were cousins of Keith Volland who attended the wedding of Leanne and Mike Restemayer on June 23. Welcome to town Bruce and Laura Humphries who moved into the for- mer home of Emma Schilbe on John St. from Exeter. Emma is now a resident at the rest home in Zurich. Welcome Welcome to Fr. Peter Keller, pastor of St. Boniface Parish, St. Peter's (St. Joseph) and Immaculate Heart of Mary (Grand Bend) A coffee social and cake was served by the CWL ladies at St. Peter's after Mass on July 1. There will be another social held on July 7 and 8 in Grand Bend. Congratulations to Gerry and Catherine Van Aaken of Goderich who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at St. Peter's Church, St. Joseph on July 1 with a Mass for their intentions. Andy and Marriette Bilcke of Hensall recently returned home from a three week vacation to Belgium and Luxburgt where they visited with relatives and friends. ZURICH NEWS Congratulations to Jessica Gingerich and Andy Broadhead who were married in London on June 23. The bride is the daughter of Paul Gingerich, R.R.3 Zurich and grand -daughter of Keith and Helen Gingerich on Zurich. Dinner and Tribute Act Show Tickets are still avail- able for the dinner and Tribute Act Show to be held at the Zurich Complex on Sat., July 14 for $50 per person. Purchase tickets at Erb's restaurant or call Nancy Regier at 236-4420. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner catered by Jerry Rader at 6:30 p.m. Entertainment after- wards - "Rock, Roll and Remember" from 8:30 - 10:30 p.m. There will be a Blood Donor Clinic held at the complex in Zurich on Fri., July 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. The next Men's Breakfast will be held at Erb's Country Kitchen on Sat., July 14 at 8:30 a.m.($6 person). Call Jack Baker if you need a ticket. Zurich Fair Activities The Agriculture Society met at the Town Hall recently to make final plans for the upcoming Zurich Fair from July 27 - 29. See posters around town for events and times. Theme: Down on the Farm - parade to start at Zurich Public School on Saturday noon and those in the parade are to be there by 11:30 a.m. to line up. The bed races have been cancelled due to a lack of interest. Helpers are needed to decorate the float for the Fair Board on Tues., July 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Claire and Margaret Deichert. Babies are wanted for the Saturday afternoon show at 2 p.m. in the auditorium. There is no entry fee for the fair or any of the events. No judging for the baby show... everyone wins. There will be lovely door prizes donated by the businesses in town. Elimination tickets and money are to be turned into John Becker as soon as possible. There will be a 50/50 draw Friday night and dancing to a live band `Shivers'. Lots of games and events going on all afternoon for the kids on Saturday with a mini tractor pull at 3 p.m. Horse show goes on at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the park area and again on Sunday at 10 a.m. Fiddlers Jamboree starts at 1 p.m. Sun., July 29 with a ham supper at 5 p.m.in auditorium at Zurich Complex. Talent Show Entertainers of all ages are invited to perform at the Opening Ceremonies and Variety Show of the Zurich Fair on Fri., July 27. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. You could sing, dance, play an instrument, or tell a story or a joke. Every enter- tainer receives a gift from the Agricultural Society. Helping our local dignitaries open the Fair will be Queen of the Furrow for Huron County, Mallory Kernighan, and president of the Huron Federation of Agriculture, Stephen Thompson. The MC and profession- al entertainer for the variety show will be "Kalen" from Zero Gravity Circus in Toronto. Kalen's high energy demonstration show cases a wealth of talent, developed over the last 10 years of fire play. A skilled manipula- tor of blazing props and a charismatic character, you'll be mesmerized by a lavish storm of fiery brilliance. He has been a sure-fire hit at every event he has performed for! Personals A lovely 80th birthday party was held for Annie Van Raay of RR 3 Dashwood on Sun., July 8 in Grand Bend at Southcott Pines (Club House) with her children, spouses, grandchildren and friends attending from various places. Mary -Lou Erb has recently moved to the new condos at stone meadows subdivision. A buck and doe will be held for Ken Rau and Cheryl Colson this Fri., July 13 at the Zurich Arena Complex. He is the son of Clarence Rau and Sharon Rau. The couple are going to be married in September. Happy 30th birthday wishes go out to Justin Regier on June 7 on sev- enth day of the seventh year. He was also born in 1977. Happy 60th birthday wishes to Ron Ducharme on July 8. ZMC On Sun., July 15 mem- bers of the Zurich Mennonite Church will have their worship serivce at the out -door pavilion, behind the ball diamond at the park. The service will be fol- lowed by a BBQ lunch with friends coming from the Jane Finch Faith Community. Everyone is welcome to attend the Vacation Bible School program on Fri., July 13 at 7 p.m. at the Zurich Mennonite Church. Come and see what the children have done this past week! St. Boniface Seventeen ladies attended the June meet- ing of St. Boniface CWLwith president Debbie Pennings. Marg Hayter from Town and Country was the guest speaker. Reports were given by all the con- venors and executive at the head table. The League gave a Rosary to all the grade 8 graduates in June and the K. of C. provided the cases for them. Julie Becker handed out quilt tickets for the Bean Festival draw on Aug. 25. The parish BBQ supper will be held on Sun., Aug. 12. The new pastor Fr. Peter Keller will be attending the CWL Provincial convention held in Windsor from July 9 - 11. There are no meetings for the summer months but they do need volun- teer helpers for the Bean Festival pie booth.
