Lucan teen opens Lick It Ice Cream & More in Lucan

LUCAN — A 17 -year-old Lucan resident has
began an exciting summer business adventure in
Lucan.
Grade 11 Medway student Brittney Jones opened
her own business June 16, featuring a ceremonial
ribbon cutting which included an impressive guest
list.
Perth -Middlesex MPP John Wilkinson, Lambton-
Kent-Middlesex MP Bev Shipley and Lucan
Biddulph Mayor Tom McLaughlin were all on hand
during the grand opening of the brand new Main
Street business, Lick It Ice Cream & More.
Jones was selected as one of just a number of
recipients who received a $3,000 grant from the
Ontario Government through a Summer Company
program which gives about 300 grants each year
as part of a venture focusing on supporting youth
in becoming entrepreneurs.
"It's a big adventure," says Jones. "I was really
nervous today and I hope it does well," she adds.
"The Summer Company program gives full-time
students the opportunity to run their own business
over the summer," states a new release from
Jones. "Applying is a competitive process.
Students submit a business plan and attend an
interview, followed by a recommendation process
and upon being accepted into the program, receive
hands on business training and funding towards
the start up costs of the business."
Many members of the community came out for
the grand opening, packing the shop once the rib-
bon was cut. A portion of the proceeds were to be
donated to the Make -A -Wish Foundation.
Wilkinson complimented Jones on her achieve-
ment, explaining that, "Most jobs created in the
province are by small businesses."
Shipley also spoke, saying to Jones, "You need to
be commended, the youth are the future."
He also said he was proud she attended Medway
High School, where both himself and McLaughlin
graduated.
And McLaughlin added he's pleased she not only
is attending Medway High School but is also a
Lucan resident.
"It's just unbelievable, right?" he asked.
"It's events like this that make my job enjoy-
able," McLaughlin added.
Jones, who would like to attend the Ivey School
of Business at Western says when deciding on a
business venture for the summer she "wanted an
opportunity that combines the chance to be an
entrepreneur and a way to give back to the com-
munity."
An ice cream parlour appealed to Jones,
"because there was no other retail outlet dedicated
solely to ice cream servicing Lucan and area."
Lick It, run by Jones and her volunteers, sister
Morgan and friends Ashley Hodgins and Amie
McRobert, features cones, shakes and smoothies.
The parlour is open seven days a week from
noon to 9 p.m., until the end of August.
And the best part, says Jones, "I get to run my
own business."
