Barbecue in Centralia July 22

CENTRALIA CORRESPONDENT
CENRALIA - Hi everyone,
I hope that you enjoyed cele-
brating Canada's 140th birthday
this past weekend. We are very
fortunate to live in this wonderful
country!
On Sunday, July lst, Rev. Ray
Hagerman returned to Centralia
United Church to lead worship for
a combined congregation from
Centralia and Zion West. He wel-
comed everyone, lit the Christ
Candle, and led the Call to
Worship.
Judy Mills provided accompani-
ment for the hymns, including
"The King of Love My Shepherd
Is", "Tell Me the Stories of Jesus",
"We Have This Ministry", and "I
the Lord of Sea and Sky".
Scripture readings were 2
Chronicles 7:11-22 and Psalm 107.
As the children were busy else-
where enjoying Canada Day activi-
ties, the adults enjoyed Rev. Ray's
story and his sermon"Canada Day
Thoughts".
Worship continues in July at
10:00 a.m. for combined worship
for Centralia and Zion West United
Churches. On July 8, Dave
Williams will lead worship at Zion.
Rev. Ray Hagerman will return to
Centralia on July 15. Rev. Ray will
lead worship at Zion on July 22.
Looking for an enjoyable barbe-
cue to avoid heating your kitchen
during the summer? On July 22nd,
bring your family and friends to a
Beef Barbecue at Centralia United
Church from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. for
a delicious meal including home-
made pies. For tickets, call Judy
Mills (228-6704) or Larry Skirmer
(229-6304). The cost for adults is
$12 and for children (age 6 to 12)
it's $6.
There are many people in the
community who are dealing with
major challenges in their lives. As
you enjoy the summer, please
keep these people in your prayers.

VARNA - Canada Day Service was
celebrated at the Varna Church on
Sunday July 1. Joyce Dowson led the
worship.
Congregational and community
prayers go out to Pastor Elly Van
Bergen and her fiance Ivan Dow on
the passing of Ivan's brother Nelson.
Funeral service was on Sunday.
Anniversary wishes were extended
to Bill and Linda Linfield celebrating
38 years. Happy birthday was sung
to Elmer Hayter celebrating a birth-
day this week.
Following the service, ice cream
sundaes were enjoyed despite the
chilly winds outside. Thanks Joyce
for taking the service for Elly.
Next Sunday, July 8, is UCW
Celebration Sunday.
Collecting is being done for the
bridal shower in honour of Erin
Keys and her forthcoming mar-
riage. This bridal shower will be
held July 18 at the Goshen Church at
7:30 p.m.
The annual picnic service will be
held at the Complex on July 29 .
Vacation Bible School is held in
Brucefield United Church Aug 7-10
from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Please regis-
ter by July 3. Volunteers are needed
and registration forms are available
at the four Churches or call Caroline
at 236-4826 or Sue at 233-3252.
A reminder of the Varna UCW din-
ner and theatre outing on Aug. 23.

The Armstrong Reunion was held
this past weekend and was a success
for visiting and reminiscing.
Congratulations to Ron Armstrong
and Julie Armstrong for all the hard
work put into the beautiful book
"Descendants of Rainey Armstrong".
Books are still available by calling
Greg Armstrong at 263-5393 or
Jean Armstrong at 263-6203. These
books would make a great anniver-
sary or Christmas gift. Special
thanks to the committee members in
the Armstrong Colours. And a very

Committee looking for volunteers

THAMES ROAD - Rev. Judith
Ritchie was in charge on July 1,
Dominion Day Church Service.
Rev. Judith lit the Christ candle
and gave words of welcome and
everyone `Passed the Peace'. She
also led in the Call to Worship
responsively. Everyone read the
opening prayer in unison.
Marilyn Vandenbussche lit the red
candle for peace. Everyone sang 'Oh
Canada'.
Rev. Judith read the Old
Testament lesson II Kings 2:1-2, 6-
14. Judith had a red stole on and she
told the youth a story about Canada
and the youth made flags which
were well done.
Judith Parker and Beth Cooper
sang the first verse of the anthem
"God's Wonderful Gardens of Love"
and the rest of the choir sang the
remaining verses accompanied by
the pianist Marilyn Vandenbussche.
The epistle lesson Galatians 5:1,
13-25 was read by Marilyn
Vandenbussche.
Helen Kadey and Zachary
received the offering and Karen
Etherington brought a bag of food
forward for the food bank.
brought the flags forward they had
made which were really good.
Rev. Judith gave the commission-
ing and pronounced the benediction.
Everyone sang the choral amen.
Everyone enjoyed cupcakes and cold
beverage provided by Rev. Judith.
Announcements
Church services for the month of
July will be held in the church base-
ment. It is hoped that they will make
it easier for those with limited mobil-
ity to attend church.
July 16 - Out of Cold Program - the
Outreach Committee is looking for
four volunteers to help out starting
around 4-4:30 p.m. If interested
please contact Joan Skinner at 235-
1379.

Bill and Rhoda Rohde attended the
sixth birthday party for their great
granddaughter Kaylee Geiger at the
Old Homestead Park near Bayfield
on Sunday. Her birthday is the first
of July. Happy birthday to Kaylee.

Crediton fastball team win three of four
CREDITON - The Crediton jr./int. fastball
team won three out of four games over the
past two weeks. The local team's only loss
was due to the London Rebels' pitch-
er who recorded 14 strikeouts
throughout the game.
Crediton 12 vs Byron Jrs. 2
Even with weary bodies after a
weekend tourney, London could not
stop the Crediton team with a deci-
sive 12 to 2 win.
Kathy Glen led her team at the
plate going four for four with a home
run and three singles. One of the sin- Jessica
gles was a nicely -placed bunt which
after errors allowed Glen to score at home.
Kerri Fulton and Cathy Conlin's bats were
also on fire with a triple and two singles
apiece. Angie Gould went three for four at the
plate and a double and a single came from the
bat of Jessica Davies. Two single hits apiece
came from Amber Preszcator and
Pertschy. Marianne Scott pounded
out a double in the fourth inning.
Carie Pertschy was strong in the
pitcher's position going the distance
for Crediton.
Crediton 7 vs Dorchester 0
The bats remained alive and steady
for Crediton when they mercied
Dorchester in five innings by a score
of 7-0.
Angie Gould almost went the cycle
going three for three with a home
run, triple and single. Carrie Dixon also went
three for three with a double and two singles.
Amber Preszcator pounded out a double and
a single while two single hits apiece came
from the bats of Cathy Conlin and Nikki Cyr.
Kerri Fulton and Rachel Michielsen added sin-
gle hits apiece.
Jessica Davies played strongly as shortstop
with a double play and some key
catches.
Carrie Dixon went the distance for
Crediton notching two strikeouts.
Crediton 1 vs London Rebels 4
A fast -paced game found Crediton
playing a very strong defensive game
with key catches and plays but could
not seem to 'wake up' the bats falling
behind with 14 strikeouts against
Davies them.
Only three of the Crediton players
were able to reach base with Kerri Fulton on
a walk, Marianne Scott with a triple and
Jessica Davies bringing in Scott for the only
run of the game after hitting a double.
Marianne Scott pitched very strongly for
Crediton going the distance.
Crediton 8 vs Oakridge 0
Crediton came out flying against
Oakridge both defensively and offen-
sively. The local team scored runs in
five out of the seven innings.
Marianne Scott led her team going
four for four with four singles. Cathy
Conlin scored all three times she hit
singles. Kathy Glen pounded out a
triple and single with Kerri Fulton
adding a double and single. Angie
Cathy Conlin Gould and Amber Preszcator both
added triples, a double by Megan
Preszcator and a single hit by Jessica Davies
clinched the win..
Marianne Scott again pitched strongly for
Crediton, going the distance notching four
strikeouts.
