Keeping cool in the heat MADD honours student
HURON - With the arrival of summer, the Huron
County Health Unit has some tips on keeping cool in the
heatwave.
In the heat and smog, some people are more at risk of
developing a heat -related illness than others. Symptoms
of heat illness or heat stroke can include rapid breath-
ing, faintness, confusion, headache and tiredness.
Those at risk include children under age four, senior
citizens, people with chronic illness and people with res-
piratory conditions like asthma.
If you have a friend or neighboUr in one of these cate-
gories, check in with them to make sure they're doing all
right.
Keep yourself hydrated. Drink water and fruit juice
regularly both to keep yourself cool and to keep your
body functioning.
Watch out for caffeinated beverages like cola, coffee
and tea. Caffeine actually dehydrates you.
Choose loose and light -weight clothing. Dark, synthetic
fabric can make you even more uncomfortable.
Keep indoors if you can, and turn down (or turn off)
electric lights. Drawing curtains or blinds can help keep
the heat out.
If you have to go outside, wear a hat, light clothing and
sunscreen. Keep to the shade when you can. Don't leave
pets unattended in a parked car.
In the worst of the heat between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.,
avoid heavy activity or exercise. Even gardening is not a
good idea.

Using the acronym "CHESS", will help you
remember the five important components of sun -
protection: "C" = Clothing -tightly woven and
dark in colour; "H" = Hats with a wide brim all
around; E = Eyeglasses that block both UVA
and UVB light; 'S" = Sunscreen with at least an
SPF of 15; 'S" = Shade. Stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4
pm for greatest protection.
Snoring can be a serious problem in some households. Snoring is
always made worse by the intake of alcohol because it relaxes the
muscles in the throat and constricts the air passage. Try not
drinking any alcohol at least 4 hours before bedtime but better stilll,
try no alcohol at all for a couple of weeks. You may be surprised
by the results.
When having a new prescription filled, your full prescription
record is usually on file in the pharmacy. What isn't always noted
are the routine nonprescription and herbal remedies you take.
Share that information with your pharmacist to ensure these
products don't impact the new prescription adversely.
We hear a lot about the benefits of wine. A study done in
Denmark last year found that wine drinkers also buy healthier food
and have better diets than those who buy beer. The wine drinkers
diet had more produce, poultry, low-fat cheese, milk and meat
compared to beer drinkers who bought more ready -cooked food.
