Strang remembered at tournament
EXETER — On June
5, 24 teams teed up at
Ironwood Golf Course
to play a Texas scram-
ble in remembrance of
Gord Strang and to
raise money for his
favourite project, the
MacNaughton Morrison
trail.
Strang spent hours
planning and negotiat-
ing land access for the
trail and he also lent
his tractors and trailer
during construction.
Strang belonged to a
group of golfers who
played a different
course every Monday
for 17 years.
After his passing the
group decided to hold a
tournament in his hon-
our and to raise money
for the trail.
Each of the Monday
golfers entered a team
and the other partners
in the trail building
who were the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation
Authority (ABCA) and
the Exeter Lions Club
were also invited to
participate.
The response was
overwhelming which
was a tribute to Strang
and the popularity of
South Huron's walking
trail.
The Strang family
entered four teams
while another was
made up of Strang's
Guelph classmates.
The ABCA entered
two teams with the
CIBC and the Exeter
Judith Parker (second from left) from the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation Authority accepts a cheque
for $5,000 from Lorne Rideout (left),Arnold
Mathers, Susanne Strang and Kristin Strang June 5.
The money was raised by the Gord Strang Memorial
Golf Tournament and will be used for the mainte-
nance and improvement of the MacNaughton
Morrison Trail. (photo/Pat Bolen)
Lions Club each enter-
ing a team and Strang's
First Line Seeds com-
pany, now known as
Dekalb, entering two
teams.
An additional 25 fam-
ily and friends joined
the golfers for the
memorial dinner.
Companies that
Strang dealt with as a
farmer and seed dealer
donated prizes and
made donations for the
maintenance of the
trail while Bill
Etherington, chairper-
son of the CIBC made a
donation of $1,000 to
the trail maintenance
fund. Several individu-
als also made dona-
tions in Strang's name.
The winning team
was Bob, Tammy, Larry
and Luke Laye while Ila
Mathers and Don
Currell won closest to
the pin.
Tammy Laye and Jim
Russell had the longest
drives and the putting
contest was won by
Arnold and Ila Mathers.
Kevin Drager won the
limited edition print
donated by the ABCA
and the tournament
raised in excess of
$5,000 for improve-
ments and maintenance
of the trail.
