The guest speaker for the assembly was Ron Van Elswyk, a wheelchair ath- lete who has lived his words since a car accident when he was 16, repre- senting Canada several times on the world stage. Winning the Panther award at the assembly were Kylen Van Osch and Reid Halpenny. The Panther Award is presented for outstanding achievement and contri- bution to athletics at South Huron throughout high school by a graduating student. Van Osch and Halpenny were also named as Senior Girl and Boy athletes of the year. Katie Anderson was named as Junior Girl of the Year while Kurt Van Osch was picked as Junior Boy. Van Osch also won the Mike Prendergast Memorial Award which is presented to the senior basketball player who combines excellence in academics and basketball. She was also named as MVP for the senior girls basketball and volleyball teams. Halpenny was a winner of the Paw award along with Katie Stewart. The Paw award is won by a female and male who are taking a physical edu- cation course, who play at least two major sports and who demonstrate skill, leadership, academic achievement and are good, valuable team mem- bers. Halpenny was also named as MVP of the senior boys volleyball team and the male MVP of the badminton team. Highlights of the year included the Girls hockey team winning the Huron - Perth bronze as well as WOSSAA gold and finish- ing in the top eight at OFSAA. The senior badminton pair of Halpenny and Colleen Willert were Huron -Perth champions while the junior boys were also Huron -Perth champi- ons. The Girls and Boys curl- ing teams were both Huron champions while the senior girls soccer team took bronze at WOS- SAA. In track and field Justin Anstett finished fourth in javelin at OFSAA after fin- ishing fourth in OFSAA regionals and picking up silver in WOSSAA compe- tition. Coach Terry O'Rourke said participation in the school sports was strong again this year with 132 girls and 143 boys taking part. O'Rourke thanked the school administration which he said "values athletics," as well as the student council and the athletes, saying "these are your teams." Vice-principal Eleanor Salmon spoke for principal Jeff Reaburn who was unable to attend. Salmon said Reaburn "believes strongly in ath- letics...they are a vital part of life," and urged stu- dents to stay active. "You are never to old to learn." Van Elswyk said after the accident he was told he was never going to walk again. "It took a few days to sink in," said Van Elswyk. "how do I live my life?" After meeting his first challenge of getting out of the hospital, Van Elswyk went back to a new high school, which he said was difficult. But it improved after he was approached to join a basketball team. Van Elswyk also joined the track team and took up swimming and said it has been an honour to represent Canada at inter- national competitions. "I saw a lot of the world through sports," Van Elswyk, who has been asked to join the Canadian basketball team which is ranked number one in the world. He is also trying to start a softball team. Other winners were Eric Cosman and Tyler Robinson who were pre- sented with the John Peters Memorial Award. The award is presented to graduating basketball players who exhibit dedi- cation and exemplary con- tributions to the overall basketball program. The Colin Hood-OFSAA School Sport Awards is presented to a graduating male, graduating female and to a coach. Sharing the award were Justin Knee, Stewart and coach Linda Farquhar. Other nominees for senior girl athlete of the year were Kelly Cronyn, Melissa Smith and Breanna Thompson. Other nominees for junior girl athlete of the year were Abbey, Julia Roberts and Keri Reschke. Junior boys athlete of the year nominees were Anstett, Kyle Masse and Blair Parsons Other nominees for the senior boys Athlete of the Year were Mac Christie, Justin Dionne and Tyler Knip. Matt Tremain won the Jeremy Truemner Memorial Award. It is in memory of Jeremy Truemner who died June 10, 1995 and is awarded to the graduating senior boy soccer player for skill, leadership, sportsmanship and integrity. Winning the Jamie Rasenburg award for the junior boy soccer player who exhibits skill, leader- ship, integrity and dedica- tion was Dimitris Fragiskatos. Matt Campbell and Tanya Stuckless won the Panther Sportsmanship award, presented to the graduating male and female athletes who best exemplify the true spirit of sportsmanship. It was donated by the phys ed department in honour of Pat Rowe for her contribution as a teacher, coach and role model at South Huron from 1971-1998. The Panther Dedication award was won by Jenna Philips and Dionne. It is presented to the graduating female and male athletes who best exemplify by example the qualities of dedication, coachability and leader- ship. This award was institut- ed in honour of Joe Fulop for his contribution as a teacher, coach and role model at South Huron from 1969-2000. Amy Weido was the win- ner of the Panther Field Hockey/Soccer award which is an award pre- sented to the graduating female athlete who has demonstrated exceptional ability in either field hock- ey or soccer throughout her high school career. The award has been instituted in honour of Jim Workman for his out- standing contribution as a teacher/coach at South Huron from 1974-2003. Here are the team award winners: Tennis.
