Co-op Seniors perfect
EXETER — The
Exeter Co-op Seniors
continue to make their
mark in their inaugural
season in the Thames
Valley Senior League.
The Seniors improved
to 5-0 last week with
wins over Thorndale
and the London
Stingrays after a pair of
wins in their first week.
Exeter 9,
Southwest London
8
Exeter's home opener
was successful May 22
as they defeated the
Southwest London
Dodgers at Alvin Willert
Field.
Jon Brand went four
solid innings according
to coach Jeff Keller
allowing just two hits,
three walks and striking
out three.
Exeter gave Brand
some run support in the
first when Mark Laye
scored from second
base from a Matt
Iredale single. Exeter
extended the lead to
2-0 when Mike Seip
scored on a Brand dou-
ble.
Exeter started to pull
away in the fourth
inning when Terry
Hogg led off the inning
with a single, scored on
a triple by Laye who
later scored, with Seip,
from another double by
Brand.
"Brand was a one-
man wrecking machine
out there tonight," said
Keller.
However, Exeter got
into trouble in the fifth
and sixth innings.
Mike Agnew made his
pitching debut for the
first time in many years.
Keller said he pitched
well, but struggled a
near the end of his out-
ing.
"He pitched well, he
was just a little rusty,"
said Keller. "He will get
better, no doubt".
London came back
and tied the score 8-8 in
the bottom of the sixth
but Exeter didn't let
that get to them.
Ricky Regier came in
to shut them out in the
seventh to give Exeter
the chance to win the
game in the bottom of
the seventh.
With Dave Russell
reaching base on an
error in the bottom of
the seventh, Matt
Iredale came up the
plate.
Iredale hit a line -drive
over the left -fielder's
head to score Russell
easily from third to give
Exeter their second win
in as many games.
"It was great to see
the guys pull themselves
together and concen-
trate on the task at -
hand," said Keller.
"It showed true char-
acter to keep fighting
after losing the big lead.
I was very proud of
everyone for not getting
down and concentrating
on the task."
Regier got the win for
Exeter with Brand get-
ting a shutout.
Exeter combined for
10 hits including a triple
by Laye, two doubles by
Brand, a double and a
single by Matt Iredale, a
double from Russell,
two hits from Hogg and
a hit each from Seip and
Regier.
Exeter 13,
Thorndale I I
Exeter kept the
unbeaten streak alive
May 25 at home, defeat-
ing Thorndale 13-11 in
what was called a "slop-
py, but productive"
game by Keller.
"Defence was not the
strong point for either
team tonight," men-
tioned Keller.
It was a see -saw
game, with Exeter and
Thorndale exchanging
the lead three times
before Exeter sealed the
victory in the sixth
inning.
Exeter took a 5-0 lead
in the second inning
with RBI singles by both
Keller and Brand.
However, the lead
wouldn't last long as
Thorndale came on
strong in their half of
the inning scoring six
runs of their own.
Hogg threw well until
the wind picked up in
the third, throwing his
balance off, according
to Keller.
Hogg had to work
hard to throw strikes,
and Thorndale took
advantage of it. They
took an 11-9 lead into
the bottom of the sixth
when Exeter finally
started hitting the ball.
With bases loaded and
just one out, Dave
Gingerich hit a monster
to the right -field fence.
"We all thought it was
gone - a grand slam.
However, it seemed to
die just at the end when
it hit the top half of the
fence," said Keller.
"I had to get everyone
to start running a little
faster once I saw that.
We were all too busy
admiring that hit!"
Exeter took a 13-11
lead into the seventh
where reliever Mitch
Iredale shut down
Thorndale to get the
win and seal the victory.
Exeter 8,Thorndale
5
Exeter got off to a
quick start in their final
meeting with Thorndale
this season.
Exeter scored two
runs in the bottom of
the first when Matt
Iredale hit a triple scor-
ing Hogg who reached
first base with a hit of
his own.
Iredale later scored on
a single by Gregus.
"It has been 15 years
since Fred last played
baseball," mentioned
Jeff Keller. "He may
look a little slower, but
he can still hit the ball."
Excellent pitching
once again by Regier
helped Exeter fend off
any offensive attacks
from Thorndale.
Thorndale did score
one run against Regier,
his first earned run this
season. Regier pitched
four solid innings,
allowing one run on two
hits, no walks and two
strike -outs.
Brand pitched three
innings in relief, allow-
ing just one earned run,
striking out four and
walking three.
Exeter scored three
more runs in the third
to take what seemed to
be a commanding, four -
run lead.
Seip and Gregus each
had hits to bring in
runs. However,
Thorndale would not go
down easy.
Thorndale came back
in the sixth inning when
Exeter's defence froze
in support of Brand.
"We seem to make
errors in bunches,"
mentioned assistant
coach Finkbeiner.
"They do not come very
often, but when they do,
it seems to hurt us."
With the game tied, in
the bottom of the sixth,
Exeter took advantage
of two Thorndale errors
to get on base.
Then, with bases
loaded and one out,
Keller said Gingerich hit
a monster shot to right -
centre field.
The ball hit the top of
the fence, scoring three
runs and giving Exeter
its fourth straight victo-
ry.
Exeter 5, London
Stingrays 3
Exeter met new com-
petition Sunday, travel-
ling to London for an
afternoon game against
the Stingrays.
Hogg got the start for
Exeter, and was the
story of the game as he
pitched all nine innings
allowing just three runs
on five hits and eight
strikeouts.
Even more impres-
sive, according to Keller
is the fact Hogg didn't
walk one batter.
He deserved that
win," said Keller.
"The team is really
starting to gel," men-
tioned Keller.
Exeter tries to
improve its record to 6-
0 Thursday night
against Byron at 8:30
p.m. at Alvin Willert
Field.

EXETER — The Exeter

In their first game the
Express battled the London
Bulls on even terms for the
better part of the game.
The Bulls rallied to win 8-4.
Derek Masse pitched the
first five innings allowing
one run on three hits. He
was followed by Curtis
Meyers who was touched
up for the remainder of the
Bulls runs. Paul Elston

chances to score runs as
they had eight hits and
fived walked batters.
Returnee Nate Burns led
the way with three hits
along with Lonnie Hawke
while Vic Olivieira and Nick
Regier had one each.
Rustiness from not having
played or practiced because
of the weather was readily
apparent in this contest
according to spokesman
Joe Fulop.
The Express stormed
back against St. Thomas on
Friday by scoring 11 runs
in the first inning and coast-
ing to a 16-0 victory.
Marty Merner allowed
