(photo/Pat Bolen) GRAND BEND — Thirty two thousand fans filled the stands of the Grand Bend Motorplex over the weekend for the Mopar Canadian Nationals and didn't let rain Saturday night affect their spirits, although it dampened the planned `Night of Fire.' Defending alcohol funny car champion Rob Atchison had a tough weekend, going out in the first round of elim- inations while Bobby Lagana Jr. defeated five -time defend- ing champion Clay Millican in the final of the top fuel race. Lagana captured his first Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Top Fuel Ironman by snap- ping Millican's win streak at Grand Bend Motorplex. Lagana took the win at 236 miles per hour to top Millican. "I wanted to win worse than any other run I've ever made in my entire life," Lagana said. While Millican is the five - time defending IHRA Top Fuel World Champion it was Lagana who had the better car all weekend. He qualified in the number three position and made two clean passes during the rounds of eliminations, all in the four second -range, before the run that produced his first victory. Dale Creasy, Jr. defeated Bob Gilbertson in the Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Funny Car final. It was Creasy's first career win in a Nitro Funny Car and put him into second place in the eMax Drag Racing Series point standings. Creasy was pleased to be able to get by Gilbertson in the final. "I'm worried about every driver out here, but Gilbertson, in my opinion, has the best car out here," Creasy said. The Torco Pro Modified final matched Alan Pittman from South Carolina against Calgary, Alberta, resident Glen Kerunsky. "Like I told my crew before the final round, I love Canada," Pittman said. Thomas increased his points lead while Atchison continues to look for his first event win of the season. Atchison fell to Fred Tigges in the first round of elimina- tions. 7-1 loss for Fury to Curinga EXETER — The Exeter Fury suffered a 7-1 loss Sunday in London to a talented Curinga squad. The Fury were never in the contest as the home squad notched two goals in the first 10 minutes with the second coming on a penalty shot after a Curinga striker was hauled down in the box by Fury defender Joe Forrester. Exeter's best scoring chance in the first half came from Ben Willis -Leake who cracked a nice shot from the left side that the keeper was able to make a good save on. Just before the break a number of Fury players had a chance to clear the ball out of the box but the Curinga player managed to maintain con- trol and pick the corner to make the score 5-0 at halftime. Exeter's play picked up in the second stanza in front of fill-in keeper Ryan Ralph but still gave up two goals before tallying their only marker of the game. After a couple of passes from Matt Strano and Ryan Carroll, Tom Phouttharath fired a shot to the far corner of the net to break the shutout. The Fury are in Cup action tonight (Wednesday) in London against Benfica and tackle St. Thomas at home Sunday night in regu- lar season play.
