The Times Advocate, 2006-06-07, Page 17Wednesday, June 7, 2006 Exeter Times -Advocate 17 Decoration Day this Sunday at Bairds Cemetery By Joan Beierling VARNA CORRESPONDENT VARNA - On Sun., June 4 the Varna Goshen congre- gation celebrated Pentecost as the Church's birthday, complete with cake and candles, gifts, family and friends, balloons and games. Pastor Elly spoke to the children about the Church's beginning and that just as balloons need to be filled with air to be complete, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit to be truly whole. During announcement time other celebrations were noted. A reminder of Norene Hayters 90th birthday and that she has been a choir member for over 75 years. Mona Stephenson celebrated her birthday on June 1. John and Carol Finlay's daughter Julia was married to Daniel Tanguay on Sat., May 27 at Emmanuel Evangelical Missionary Church in Elmira. Congrats also to John and Carol on the birth of their first grand child, Cole the son of Billy and Bethany. Congratulations were also extended to Jennifer Keys on being Queen of the Prom at Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton. Congratulations were extended to Jason Beierling. Jason placed first in the World Crokinole Championship Tournament on Saturday in Tavistock. There were four members from the Varna area taking part and all placed in the top 16. In response to this, a new busi- ness called "The Corner Store" will begin. This store will continue to serve the regular coffee and muffm crowd but offer more for the entire community. Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks. Varna U.C.W. met at the home of Deb Rathwell on Thursday night. Deb opened with the U.C.W. purpose and a poem "Small Things Count". Thank you to Carol Simons and Bernice Reid for the program and lunch. A thank you to Mildred McAsh and daughter Krista for cleaning the cabin at Camp Menesetung. A dona- tion was made to Vacation Bible School in Brucefield. June 12 is Camp Bimini Day. Anyone wanting to go please contact Marg Hayter for a ride. The U.C.W. will Fall fair cancelled In April the Exeter Agricultural Society wrote a letter to the editor to the Exeter Times- Advocate. This letter was printed stating that a number of current directors will not be continuing in leadership roles and without these positions filled the Exeter Fall Fair is in jeopardy. We are actively seeking individuals interested in help- ing the fair move forward. For the fair to continue, we need individuals willing to take an active part in the Exeter Agricultural Society. As a result of this letter being printed in the Times -Advocate we did not receive one phone call or inquiry which means sliewe are sorry to inform you we are forced to cancel the Exeter Fall Fair in 2006. Maybe if you did not see this letter printed in April and would like to see the Exeter Fall Fair continue you can still call Norma at 235-1284. If interested individ- uals come forward during the next months maybe we can plan to have an Exeter Fall Fair in 2007. It is too late for this year as plans have to be made early in February and March to have a successful Fall Fair. We thank everyone who has contributed in some way Y to our fair whether it be in donations, or being an exhibitor or a volunteer. All of you helped make our Exeter Fall Fair a success. Our ancestors would be very proud of 151 years - 1854 to 2005. Wow! Thank you. Letters tO the Editor DIRECTORS OF THE EXETER AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY meet on Aug. 24 for a dinner at the Blyth Church and then on to see "School House" at the Blyth Theatre. Anyone wanting tickets please call Mona Stephenson at 263-5351 or Sjoujke Steenbeek at 233-3383 as there are tickets available. Bernice Reid then read the Scripture reading and a Hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth" was sung. Carol Simons talked about the wonderful gardens in Huron County. Gardens are many things to many people. They are a God given talent to be shared. People with vegetable gardens share the produce and gardens can be farm land. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You can be closer to God in the garden then anywhere on earth. Fill your mind with seeds of hope and peace. Carol ended with prayer and grace. Ladies then sat around Deb Rathwell's table and enjoyed birthday cake for the celebration of Mona Stephenson's birthday on that day. Ladies brought their favourite tea cup and hat and told their stories about them. Some brought very old cups and saucers from their grandmothers or some recent ones with good stories. Hats were worn from weddings, honeymoons and just their own garden hats. There were many good stories. Thanks to Deb Rathwell for opening up her home.
