The Times Advocate, 2006-06-07, Page 88 Exeter Times -Advocate Customer Service Workshop in Grand Bend GRAND BEND — The biggest edge that small business has when competing with the big box stores is customer service — or so they like to think. "In general, small business owners are friendlier when dealing with the public. They offer their special skills or knowledge, and they give busi- ness a personal touch," says Mary Alderson, Community Economic Development officer with the Sarnia-Lambton Business Development Corporation. But sometimes, those own- ers get tired and forget to go the extra mile. Or they hire new employees, and don't have time to train them. As a means of offering sup- port to small business, the Sarnia-Lambton Business Development Corporation is presenting workshops in cus- tomer service across Lambton County, including in Grand Bend. The Grand Bend work- shops take place June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Grand Bend Area Community Health Centre and June 29 at 9 a.m. at the same location. The focus of the two-hour workshop is the video "Give 'em The Pickle!" It features entre- preneur Bob Farrell with tips Queensway enjoys annual yard sale HENSALL — Queensway's corner at the Hensall Community Yard Sale was a very busy place Sat., May 27. Retirement Home Operations Group and Nursing Home resi- dent council want to thank all the volunteers, staff and family members that donated items for the sale and helped, whether with selling, barbecuing or wheeling residents around town to see the sights. Residents appreciate the opportunity to stay involved in their communi- ty by participating in this annual event. Queensway congratu- lates staff members Elaine Stebbings, Theresa Bedard and Julie Grimminck who recently received 10 year pins for their involvement in the VON Volunteer Palliative Care program. The presentation took place at the Festival Inn at Stratford on May 28. We are also proud of the large number of staff that have completed their Level 1 and Level 11 Palliative Care training. Pastor Phil Wagler of the Zurich Mennonite Church led worship Tuesday after- noon with special music by Krystle Gingerich. Donna Smale, auxiliary volunteer organized the euchre games Wednesday afternoon with a good turnout of competitors. Nursing home residents also benefited from coffee and current events, exer- cises, music therapy, man- icures and baking throughout the week. Retirement residence was busy this week with several individuals on an outing to the Blue Harbour Restaurant in Bayfield facilitated by volunteer dri- vers Edna Deitz and Julie Grimminck. A child who has one parent with allergies has a 30% chance of developing allergies. If both parents have allergies, there's a 70% chance of the child having them. In Canada, six million of us are affected by allergies each year. Allergies can't be cured, but they certainly can be controlled. Our pharmacists have many helpful suggestions on this topic. This summer don't bake your skin in the sun. Use your sunscreen and remember to apply it at least a half hour before exposure. Unless you live in Antarctica (where there are no mosquitoesl, consider using insect repellent. Those containing DEET are most effective. Farrell owned a chain of ice cream parlours well-known for the extras they offered their customers. The workshop includes four keys to good customer service and a variety of tips for those dealing with the general public, including how to deal with an angry customer. The impor- tance of a positive attitude is stressed, as well as the need for consistency in service. Taking a team approach will be empha- sized. There is also information on how to serve customers when having difficulty under- standing their accents. "We talked to small business owners in retail and service and many identified customer service as an area where they felt they could improve their business. Everyone knows how important good customer ser- vice is, so owners are seeking assistance for their employees," Alderson says. "We kept the price at only $5 so that employers can afford to send their entire staff," she adds.
