women," said Women
Today of Huron executive
director Pam Hanington.
Women Today of Huron
is supported in this project
by the Women's Shelter,
Second Stage Housing and
Counselling Services of
Huron. Both women's
organizations have been
offering groups for
women on a variety of
issues ranging from self
esteem to self employ-
ment over the past four
years. This project
addresses some of the
needs of rural women that
both organizations and
rural women have identi-
fied as being barriers to
community involvement,
including poverty, social
isolation and discrimina-
tion.
The first course is called
"Being For Women" and
will emphasize the value
of the contributions rural
women make to their
communities. As well, it
will challenge some of the
barriers that stop women
from trusting one another
to work collectively to
solve shared problems. A
follow-up to this group
will be a training session
on how to start and main-
tain self-help groups.
"We Belong Here" is the
second course, and it will
focus on understanding
the idea and reality of
"citizenship," knowing
rights as women, as well
as being aware of the
resources in the commu-
nity that women can
mobilize for individual
and collective benefit. The
follow-up training to this
group will be on sustain-
able livelihoods, including
how to develop alternative
income sources.
WTH regularly under-
takes participatory action
research on issues of con-
cern to rural women.
Most recently, WTH pub-
lished a handbook on
poverty issues for rural
women and communities.
"How We Count" is also a
resource book that lists
"survival" services for
women in Huron, Perth,
Grey and Bruce counties.
These Trillium -funded
courses will be co -facili-
tated by Hanington and
Shari MacDonald, the
Outreach Advocate for the
women's shelter. The
first course will start in
September, but focus
groups to determine spe-
cific topics will be held in
June. The majority of the
funding towards the pro-
ject will support trans-
portation and childcare
costs of participants.
WTH is a community-
based, rural women's
centre located in Goderich
with a mission to
"enhance the status of
women in Huron County
through education and
social action."
For more information,
call Hanington at 524-
6767 or MacDonald at
