Announcements/Community
South Huron fire chief John Morgan kept local baseball players happy Friday morning by extinguishing a fire at
the Rec Centre in a tractor trailer carrying beer for the Exeter Express ball tournament held over the week-
end. Despite damage to the trailer's refrigeration unit, all the beer was saved. (photo/Pat Bolen)
WomenToday joins campaign
GODERICH — Women
Today of Huron (WTH)
has joined a
provincewide campaign
designed to engage
community members to
take steps to end abuse
against women.
The campaign is
aimed at friends, family
and neighbours of
women and their chil-
dren who are experi-
encing abuse and
encourages them not to
be afraid to communi-
cate their willingness to
help in these situations.
As a kick-off to the
campaign, WTH will be
premiering a short doc-
umentary, "Neighbours,
Friends and Families:
What Everyone Should
Know About Woman
Abuse," at its Annual
General Meeting
Thursday at the Huron
County Museum at 6
p.m.
The documentary
highlights the story of
Sandra Schott who was
murdered by her hus-
band Edward Schott
before he committed
suicide near Dorchester,
Ont. The couple lived in
Ingersoll with their
three children. Through
Sandra's work as a per-
sonal support worker in
Ingersoll, a co-worker
and close friend tells
how she saw the signs
of abuse but didn't
know what to do.
Sandra's sister-in-law
looks back on the cou-
ple's relationship and
can now see that
Edward qualified for 18
of the 19 risk factors of
an abuser.
"Had I known, she
would not have been
left alone ... she would
be here."
"I am so pleased to be
able to show this mov-
ing documentary at our
AGM," said WTH execu-
tive director Pam
Hanington.
"I hope it will inspire
people to become more
informed about violence
in relationships so that
we can all respond
effectively when we
know about or suspect
violence in the lives of
our family members,
friends, and even our
neighbours."
Violence affects all
members of a communi-
ty and the goal of this
campaign is to create a
society where everyone
takes violence seriously.
Through the documen-
tary, a panel of experts
highlights even simple
things friends or neigh-
bours can do to help by
letting the woman know
they support her, or by
placing a pamphlet for
the local women's shel-
ter in her car when they
know she will be the
one to see it. Making the
choice to step forward
to put an end to vio-
lence helps to con-
tribute to a healthier
and safer society.
Everyone is welcome
to attend the screening
of the documentary to
lend support towards
ending violence in our
communities.

tion, contact Hanington
at 524-6767.

EXETER — On The Edge was a swingin' good time,
full of much mind -numbing video game playing and a
complete lack of sleep.
The Jr. Optimists were troopers, serving up the food
late into the night. The winner of the second Xbox
tournament was Marcus Haccius, with
Ben Toornstra coming in a close sec-
ond place. I bow down to their 1337
n00b pwning skillz (if you didn't
understand that last sentence, pat
yourself on the back).
Relay for Life is coming up soon.
And by soon I mean June 9. Get your
registration form in now, as there's
not much time left to do it.
The faster you do, the more likely
you are to have happy dreams and
nice weather. Though this may not be
true (contrary to popular belief,
I don't actually control the weather), it's still a good
idea to get those papers filled out. They can be handed
in to SHDHS's main office.
Formal is on Friday. Rock on.
