(photos/Pat Bolen) 4-1 loss for Exeter Fury EXETER — The Exeter Fury picked up their first win of the season May 20 against a shorthanded Hispanos squad, crushing them 10-2. The game started out as a tight affair with goals hap- pening quickly. Darren Marziali led the way for Exeter with five goals, fol- lowed by Matt Prout with a hat -trick and Ryan Carroll and Ben Willis -Leake with a single goal each. Marziali opened the scor- ing after a pass from Carroll and then made it 2-0 with a blast to the top corner after taking a pass from Pete McAllister. Even with eight players the Hispanos notched a goal after the Fury defence failed to clear the ball out of their end. Willis -Leake gave Exeter the two -goal cushion once again as Marziali crossed the ball in right to the foot of Willis -Leake who made no mistake to make the score 3- 1 Marziali added his third of the game before halftime after a crossed ball from defender Shawn McFalls to make the score 4-2 at the half. Exeter controlled the sec- ond half right from the start and increased the lead when Matt Prout won a battle with the keeper for a loose ball and tapped it into the net. Marziali added his fourth of the contest on a blast into the top corner followed shortly after by Prout who broke in alone on the keeper and picked the corner for a 7-2 Fury lead. Ryan Carroll picked up his first of the season after a nice give and go play and then fired a shot off the post and in. Prout notched his third goal and then Marziali fin- ished off the scoring as he slid towards the right post to corral a cross from Pete Phouttharath and then knock the ball over the line to make it 10-2. Marziali was robbed by the keeper on two other break- aways as he just missed the team record of six goals in a game set by Marty DeBruyn. "We had a good practice Wednesday and the guys responded well after a tough season opener," coach Andrew Prout stated. The Fury's season record dropped to 1-2 with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of visit- ing Wallaceburg on Sunday. Exeter played a strong first half, but were at the mercy of a couple of bad plays. Wallaceburg got on the board when a free kick was called just outside of the eighteen -yard box. The Wallaceburg kicker made no mistake, kicking the ball past the wall and just out of the reach of makeshift keeper, Tom Phouttharath. The visiting side made it 2- 0 on a crossed ball. The striker found a corner of the net after beating the Fury defenders. In the second half, Exeter looked like a tired team. Wallaceburg made it 3-0 fol- lowing another short free kick. The defenders failed to clear the ball and it was deposited into the back of the net. They made it 4-0 a short time later as the winger used his speed to cut in and fire a shot into the corner. The Fury got a token goal late in the game, beginning with a nice head ball from Willis -Leake. The ball found the post and the rebound was tapped in by Pete Phouttharath. "We stopped running in the second half and let them take control of the game. It is becoming a pattern with us this year," said McFalls. "We need to regroup at practice this week and come to play with a positive atti- tude." The Fury play in London on Sunday at 6 p.m. against Curinga. SPORTS Tips?
