feit' SOUTH HURON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
r
STUDENT OF THE YEAR
STUDENT OF THE YEAR WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT SOUTH HURON'S FORMAL - FRI. JUNE 2
PRESENTATION BETWEEN 10:30 AND 11:00 P.M.
Reid Hal • enn
During his four years at South Huron District High School,
Reid Halpenny has been an active academic and athletic stu-
dent. Not only has he received honours standings each year,
but he has also been top male academic student in grade 9
and 11. As well, he has received many top subject awards
along the way. Reid also participated in the many math con-
tests available each year. These academic achievements have
allowed him to pursue an education in engineering.
SHDHS has also provided Reid with many athletic opportu-
nities that he has taken advantage of. During his high school
career, he has frequently competed in volleyball, basketball,
badminton and track and field, but particularly found success
in volleyball, badminton and track and field. High school vol-
leyball allowed him the opportunity to find a true talent and
love for the game where he continues to play at a highly com-
petitive national level. He will continue to play at the varsity
level as he pursues his post -secondary education. Reid has
won many top athletic awards as well as Jr. Boy's athlete of
the year.
Reid has been an active volunteer in volleyball at SHDHS by
helping with the elementary school camps and assisted in
coaching the senior girl's volleyball team. Outside of school,
he has helped with the Ontario and Canada Summer Games,
worked on a provincial election and volunteered at the com-
munity hospital. Reid's successful high school career has
made him a good candidate for the 2005-2006 male student
of the year.
Justin Knee
Hello, my name is Justin Knee. I live in Centralia. My proud
parents are Perry and Nina. I have two siblings, Crystal and
Ryan. Both were graduates from South Huron District High
School.
Over the years I have had the pleasure of representing my
school on different sports teams such as the volleyball team,
the basketball team, all four years on the rugby team, and on
the high school hockey team. I was fortunate to be on the
high school hockey team, along side my brother Ryan when
we went to Peterborough, and brought home the bronze
medal at OFFSSA. The experiences you learn through high
school activities are something that every student should
experience. Whether it's involvement in sports, student
council, committees, or through music you will have the feel-
ing of teamwork and camaraderie. For my love of sports I
have tried to help younger players develop their skills in
becoming a competitive opponent through my community
involvement.
I have gained tremendous knowledge throughout my four
years here and have acquired many lasting friendships. I would
also like to thank the teachers and coaches that inspired me
along the way. The experiences that I have undertaken along
the way at South Huron will stay with me through my next
journey in education. I have been accepted to Conestoga
College where I will be studying "Law and Security." I would
like to express my gratitude and appreciation to my friends
and fellow classmates for nominating me for student of the
year.
During Matthew Tremain's time at South Huron, he attempted to accomplish as much as possible.
As he looks back today, he is extremely grateful and feels very privileged to have chosen to attend
S.H.D.H.S.
There are people here that have made long standing impacts on his life, friends whom he hopes to
keep in contact with, as the class of 2006's lives continue on in separate directions.
There are memories to last a lifetime, many things that he will remember fondly, and others not
so.
An early goal Matthew established at the beginning of high school was to be as active and involved
as possible.
Theatre always played a large role in Matthew's life, and with Original Kids in London, he per-
formed in seven shows throughout his time in high school. Including leads in Seussical, Crazy for
You, Aida, Fame.
These shows rehearsed nine hours a week for four to five months, but always ended with a sense
of great accomplishment and satisfaction.
Matthew has also attempted to be as extra -curricular active as possible within the school and sur-
rounding communities.
He has been a member of the junior and senior Reach for the Top for all four years of high school.
Matthew played in the intermediate and senior band for two years each, respectively.
He has sang various solos, as well as being a member of the choir. Matthew ran cross country,
played on the tennis team, and has captained both the
junior and senior boys soccer team.
In his senior year, he was a prefect, as well as a peer
tutor in previous years.
Matthew also had the privilege of being selected to
attend the Forum for Young Canadians in Ottawa in grade
eleven.
Matthew believes that your high school years should be
some of the best. Within this, extra -curricular activities
have been a large part of the experience for Matthew.
He enjoys keeping busy, helping out in the community,
meeting new people and making friends.
These are the things that high school is all about.
Matthew believes high school is an extremely important
time.
Focusing on development, finding your place in the
world, and attempting to decided what direction to head
from there.
Matthew would like to thank his teachers, friends and
peers who have touched his life. Matthew is extremely
flattered for his nomination as student of the year.

Matthew Miner
Matthew Miner is in his fourth and final year at South Huron.
During his high school career Matthew has done a great many
things, among them school sports (track and field, badminton),
the school show in Grade 9 ("Saga of the Steamer Atlantic"),
Reach for the Top, chess club, dodgeball, 30 Hour Famine, and
student council. He has helped organize two On The Edge
movie night/video game tournaments and is on this year's Relay
for Life committee.
In Grade 10 he was South Huron's ambassador to the HOBY
leadership conference. He has written numerous math competi-
tions, only a few at which he's failed miserably.
In his spare time Matthew enjoys making videos with his
friends, which are posted on the internet for the (arguably non-
existent) benefit of the public. This hobby, which has led to
many strange looks from passer-bys and one trip to the hospi-
tal, inspired Matthew to create South Huron's video club. In
2005 he attended the Imago Film Festival in Clinton, igniting his
love of the moving picture and making people act ridiculous in
front of a camera.
Matthew is currently working at the Exeter Times -Advocate
as a flyer inserter and at Pizza Delight in Grand Bend as a pizza
creator (for lack of a better term). In 2004 Matthew participat-
ed in the Summer Company Program where he ran his own
web design business for a summer.
After thinking long and deeply, Matthew has decided to join
the fine folks studying Computer Science at the University of
Waterloo. He would also like to study film production at some
point, though when this point occurs is still unknown.
Matthew would like to take this opportunity to thank every-
one that has made his high school career an enjoyable one,
including his parents (John and Laurel Miner), his siblings, and of
course his friends. As well, he would like to congratulate the
other nominees and wish for them a completely awesome
future.
