Crediton resi- dent Glenda Wuerth will fill the vacancy. 20YEARS AGO May 28, 1986- Exeter council members want no part of the Ontario government's proposal to allow municipalities to decide whether liquor will be sold in grocery and variety stores. 30YEARS AGO May 30, 1976 - Specials at Exeter Pharmacy this week include a tube of Colgate dental cream for 97 cents and Gillette foamy shaving cream and a pack- et of Wilkinson razor blades at 77 cents each. 35YEARS AGO May 27, 1971 - If Linda Bourne is able to carry out her present plans, Exeter will have a nursery school for pre-school children next fall. She recently graduated from a two year course in Early Childhood Education at Sarnia's Lambton College and has made arrangements to rent the local Scout Hall for three classes for three and four year olds. Harry Stuart has been elected president of the Exeter Optimist Club succeeding retiring president George Pratt. Vice-presidents are Bill Dinney and Ben Hoogenboom and Brian Sanders is the secre- tary. 45 YEARS AGO May 27, 1961 - Charlie Godbolt's brilliant young pacer, Dust -A -Bout came home with a second and a first in Western Fair Raceway's D-1 pace last week. Tom Yearley as the winning driver. 50YEARS AGO May 28 1956 - Murray Dawson, 20 year-old son of Mr.and Mrs. Fred Dawson of R.R. 1, Hensall topped 265 other contestants at the Huron County Junior Farmers' livestock competition in Seaforth, Friday. Maxine Reder has successfully completed the spring singing examination of the University of Western Ontario and Marilyn Bissett has completed with first class honours the intermediate exam at the same university. Both are pupils of Mrs. Harold Sturgis. 60YEARS AGO May 29, 1946 - The price of milk to consumers in Exeter was raised to 12 cents a quart on Saturday. Mr. William Chambers has purchased the butcher business from Mrs. J. Hunter, formerly owned by her husband. The 24th anniversary of the opening of the Centralia Church ws observed Sunday with Rev. W. Cleave of Grand Bend in charge. Dr. F.J. Milner is this week moving into the resi- dence he recently purchased on Anne street 85 YEARS AGO May 30, 1921 - The Central Experimental Farm at Ottawa has leased for a period of two years the Clinton Flax Mill and will operate it as an experi- mental station. The ceremony of unveiling the tablet in honour of those members of the Bank of Commerce staff who enlisted in the Great War, took place at the bank on Thursday afternoon last. Appropriate remarks were made by Rev. Trumper, Rev. Foote, Reeve Beavers and Major Heaman. Manager Chapman occupied the chair. I I OYEARS AGO May 29, 1896 - The township of Blanshard now enjoys total prohibition. The licence granted this year to the hotel at McIntyre's Corners has been returned as no tenant could be gotten to take the premises. That closes the last hotel in the township, one after the other giving up because of lack of patronage. So it will be with all other townships in time without any coercive measure of prohibition. August Hill of Crediton is the possessor of a curiosity in the shape of a white blackbird. They are pure white of the blackbird species and were cap- tured in an old barn along the river. The Ladies Society of James Street Methodist Church will hold their annual strawberry festival on June 9. Admission is 25 cents. The congregation is still overwhelmed with the help and assistance of the Canadian troops in Holland during the dreaded war years. On April 29 the evening started with Karen Knip and her daughter Maria entertaining the crowd. Eric K. Heywood then gave a history of the church property which originally was his, the Heywood home and also commented on his book "Cenotaph Remembrance History Book. Comrade Bob Reynolds presented the "Legion History" accepted by Ken Boersma for the Christian Reformed Church. Comrade Norm Eveland presented the "Legion and Stephen Township" book to Henny Poortinga. Comrade Bill Dougherty presented the "Legion and the Town of Exeter" book to Karen Knip. Comrade Howard Holtzman presented the "Legion and Usbourne Township" book to Peter Visscher.
