"I voted against but it has nothing to do with the extension," says Steckle. The vote was 149 to 145, to continue the mission. Steckle was on the minority side. Steckle says he wasn't pleased with the amount of time given by Prime Minister Stephen Harper — just six hours — to the MPs for such an important deci- PAUL STECKLE sion, especially since the Afghan military mission would not expire until February. "Holland and Britain were given five to six months," says Steckle. Steckle says although he voted no, he was "prepared to vote yes all day" but quickly changed his mind when Harper began his debate in front of the House of Commons last May 17. Harper spoke of ignoring the minority opponents, extending the mission another year and then asking Canadian voters to vote for a two-year extension in an election. Steckle says this is another way to divide the Parliament and says, "I feel Canadians are not being treated fairly." Steckle also says he hasn't been engaged in a situation like this in "my 13 years of Parliament." "This has the fingerprints of George W. Bush," says Steckle. Wise running in Hensall By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF HENSALL — Hensall's Kay Wise is the latest candidate to throw her hat in the ring for the 2006 Bluewater municipal election. Wise, running for council for the first time, is running for the coun- cillor position in the Hensall Ward. "My decision to seek the leader- ship for the Hensall Ward of the Bluewater municipality was one I've taken a great deal of time and soul-searching to reach," she told the Times -Advocate last week. "And I think what probably the remaining decision -maker was — along with many other issues — I feel strongly about the ambitions of our present mayor (Bill Dowson) to do away with the ward system." Wise says scrapping the ward system "would totally destroy democracy in our area." Wise's name has been in the news over the last couple of years through her bid to have Hensall deamalgamate from the rest of Bluewater. While the deamalgama- tion committee still exists, Wise has stepped down to focus on council. Among her community work is her role as chairperson of the Hensall Spring Fair committee and the Hensall Community Development Action Committee working to improve the communi- ty. She says council needs someone who has "a strong and focused atti- tude." Wise would also like to see more transparency and accountability from council on items such as pro- jects, contracting and "a zero - based budget." Wise has a background in person- nel and administration in law enforcement and resources and says she would also like to take a closer look at the municipality's human resources practices, regarding reviews and perfor- mance appraisals.
