Guarded reaction from
Huron County
HURON - "Guarded" is the reaction of the
Huron County Federation of Agriculture to the fed-
eral budget.
Huron Federation president Nick Whyte is
pleased that the $1.5 billion announcement is not
a re -announcement of previously allocated dollars,
and "if the flow of money comes along with a
change in inventory valuation and negative mar-
gins in the Canadian Agricultural Income
Stabilization (CAIS) calculations, then it's a step in
the right direction, but there is still a need for a
long term program, such as the Risk Management
Program that farmers have presented to govern-
ment," he added.
"There is an acknowledgment at the political
level of an urgent need in Canada's farm commu-
nity for immediate assistance," says Ron Bonnett,
president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture.
"What we need now is to work with the federal
government to ensure that the funding will flow to
farmers in desperate need."
Bob Friesen, president of the Canadian
Federation of Agriculture says, "On April 5, 10,000
farmers from across Canada came to Ottawa to
showcase the unprecedented farm income crisis
and to look for hope from the government."
"$1.5 billion dollars is a lot of money, but if that
money doesn't get to farmers quickly and to the
right places, all the money in the world isn't going
to fix the problem," Friesen added.
Farm organizations are concerned that distribu-
tion of the funding through CAIS, as it is formulat-
ed now, will continue to create inequities in farm
and rural communities across Canada into the
future.
Ontario's farm organizations also note that
Ontario Minister of Agriculture Food and Rural
Affairs Leona Dombrowsky, has shown leadership
and has taken the first step in discussions to
address the need for multi-year programs for
Ontario's agricultural industry.
"We hope Dombrowsky and federal Minister
Chuck Strahl will continue to work together to
address the need for a long term program that
benefits all farmers," added Whyte.
