HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2006-05-10, Page 3332 Exeter Times–Advocate Wednesday, May 10, 2006 SHDHS Excellence in Education winners SEAFORTH — The Avon Maitland District School Board handed out its Excellence in Education Awards May 3 in Seaforth. Following are the local winners. AIIy Macgregor, student Ally is an accomplished and talented young woman who has consistently demonstrated excellence in many differ- ent aspects of her school career. She has been an enthusiastic partici- pant in a wide range of school activities, including playing the clarinet and trom- bone in the music program, and as an actor in school drama productions every year since Grade 9. She exemplified courage and dedication when she blew out her knee while acting in last year's production of "Return to Eden" and continued with her perfor- mance. Ally is performing as Friar Lawrence in this year's production of "Romeo and Juliet." Ally is the deputy premier for this year's Student Council. She has served as a peer mentor and peer tutor. Ally helped orga- nize the first two Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life events at South Huron and has participated in the 30 Hour Famine three times. She was the 2005 ambassador for the Exeter Fall Fair, participated in the United Nations Youth Pilgrimage in 2005, and won the national Mathieu Da Costa Historical Writing Contest in Grade 10. In addition to her extracurricular activi- ties, Ally is an excellent student who has earned numerous subject awards and made the honour roll every year. Ally plans to study drama at university in the fall. Her proud parents are Richard and Sheila Macgregor of Exeter. Vicki Hartman, student Throughout her time at South Huron Vicki has been active in many aspects of school life. She served as the Student Council activities co-ordinator and is the chairperson of the formal committee this year. Vicki has been involved with the school shows since Grade 9, and is acting as one of the stage managers for this year's production of "Romeo and Juliet." Vicki has served as a peer mentor for three years, and as a prefect this year. She helped on the Relay for Life organiz- ing committee, and has been a member of Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving since Grade 9. Vicki is also a trained youth member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and has participated in the RIDE campaign in the Exeter area. After completing the walk Vicki came to the school and participated in the 30 Hour Famine for another 24 hours. Vicki is a very enthusiastic young woman who freely offers her time, talent and energy to many good causes. She was recognized as a "Super Teen" by Next Step Magazine earlier this year. Vicki is the daughter of Barry and Diane Tieman of Exeter. Tyson Breuer, student Tyson has packed an extraordinary number of activities into his high school career. He has been involved with the student council every year since Grade 9, first as a grade representative and later as a member of the executive. He is a member of OSAID, and has participated in the 30 Hour Famine Tyson represented South Huron at the Forum for Young Canadians in 2004, where he had the opportunity to learn about government and meet students from across Canada. He sings with the school choir, played in the school band and has performed in a number of the drama productions. Tyson is also a peer mentor. In addition to all these varied activities Tyson has maintained very good marks in school. After completing his courses in first semester Tyson embarked on a tour of Europe. In the fall he hopes to study either engineering or screen writing. Tyson is the son of Margrit and Tino Breuer of Grand Bend. Peter Zwart, community member Peter Zwart has been a fixture at school music concerts at South Huron for more than 10 years. He has regularly volun- teered his time and equipment to tape the concerts — this has allowed the student musicians to hear their performances and determine areas for improvement, a key to the great success that the South Huron music program has achieved. Peter started recording music as a hobby and volunteered his services when his daughter Amy started music at South Huron. He enjoys recording the concerts and sharing them with the students, who in turn enjoy the opportunity to hear themselves play. Before his retirement, Peter worked at General Coach in Hensall, and drove school bus part time. In the words of South Huron music director Bob Robilliard, "Peter is a good guy" and very deserving of this award.
