(photo/Scott Nixon) By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF ST. JOSEPH — Seven years after she started and about 1,800 quilts later, Diane Carson is still going strong. The St. Joseph resident runs her own business, The Electric Quilter, out of her home and just won a teacher's ribbon at a machine quilters' convention in Manchester, New Hampshire. Carson started making quilts about seven years ago, following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmoth- er, who were hand quitters. "I love quilts," Carson says, explaining that she is a long arm emitter, meaning she uses a long arm quilting machine. Carson's 12 -foot long quilting machine is an expensive piece of equipment — she says it costs about as much as a small car. It includes a hand -guided machine on verti- cal and horizontal tracks that allow her the freedom to quilt in all directions. The machine includes a laser light to help her quilt patterns and Carson is able to control the stitch per inch speed. In addition to her recent award, one of Carson's clients, Anne Beaudoin of Port Franks has a gallery show at the Homer Watson House and Gallery in Kitchener until the end of May. Carson quilted all of Beaudoin's quilts on display. Beaudoin is what Carson describes as "a topper," someone who does the top part of the quilt, while Carson puts it together. Another client of Carson's is featured at the St. Jacob's Schoolhouse during the Waterloo Festival. Carson says quilts can either have a lot of detail and patterns in an heirloom style or can look more tradition- al. She said quilts in shows tend to have a lot of detail and quilting. Carson can quilt any type of style and many of her clients give her free reign because they've gotten to know her work. In addition to quilting for other people, Carson has quite a collection of quilts in her home. She said she enjoys entering shows because that is where she learns new things. Carson started The Electric Quilter because she want- ed to work at home. She quilts everyday. "If I'm at home, I usually quilt from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.," she says. "You could say I'm obsessed with it." Carson credits her husband Bill with supporting her love of quilting. Quilting for long hours can be physically demanding and Carson has had surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, something she says many quilters get. April is Carson's busiest month and she is already tak- ing bookings for July and August. She has many cus- tomers in Kitchener and even has one in Bermuda. Carson takes quilting classes every year and says there are always new gadgets and patterns to get. She does most of the maintenance on her machine, a Gammill, which Carson says is "the Cadillac" of quilting machines. Carson is a member of the quilting guilds in Kirkton and Goderich and organizes bus trips to large quilt shows in the U.S. Stolen vehicle found ZURICH — On May 1 a red 2004 Chevrolet Impala was reported stolen over the weekend. The vehicle was left parked on a Main Street driveway in Zurich April 29. The same vehicle was located on Parr Line in Bluewater on May 1. The vehicle had been completely burnt by a fire.
