Pigeons fly again
LUCAN — Well, they
didn't break the sound
barrier or leave vapour
trails in the sky, but they
flew home.
On Saturday the Lucan
Homing Pigeon Club held
the first races of the sea-
son.
Two races were flown
with one from Oshawa
and the other from the
Brampton area. Four
members shipped 55 birds
to Oshawa and five con-
tested the Brampton race,
which saw 84 birds
entered.
The Oshawa birds were
released at 8:30 a.m.
under less than ideal con-
ditions. The sky was
deeply dark and the
northwest wind grew pun-
ishingly strong.
Brendan Cunningham
from Lucan clocked the
winning pigeon from
Oshawa at 11:55.34 a.m.
It managed an average
speed of 1,070
meters/minute or 64 kilo-
metres per hour.
Not bad! Brendan also
took positions two and
four.
Norm Hardy's birds
gave Cunningham's a
good run for the money
placing third, fifth and
sixth, while L. de Haan
had to be satisfied with
seventh place. Tom
Hardy's birds took their
time and some missed out
on supper.
Jack Hardy won the
Brampton race with a bird
that, in terms of a pigeon's
life, is about as old as Jack
is. And just like Jack, this
bird just keeps on racing.
Its speed was 68 kilome-
tres per hour.
Cunningham's birds
placed second, fourth and
fifth while Norm Hardy
picked up positions three,
six and seven.
de Haan and Tom
Hardy's birds forgot that
just coming home is not
good enough -they have to
race home!

Haan.
