32 Exeter Times -Advocate Wednesday, May 3, 2006 Conservation Dinner another success By Jim Beckett TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — "Never forget where you come from." These were words of advice given many years ago to Exeter native Randy Tieman by former mayor and sports enthusiast Derry Boyle. Tieman relayed this message to a capacity audience at the 17th annual Conservation Dinner Thursday night at the South Huron Rec Centre, convincing everyone that he is still a home town boy. The popular broadcasting veteran managed to keep the audience spellbound with anecdotes of his experi- ences covering a variety of professional sports. He is now a sports reporter with CFCF-TV in Montreal. His job as master of ceremonies at the dinner was to make sure the event ran smoothly, keeping the audi- ence in the mood to generously support the auction. Auctioneers Norm Whiting, Bob Heywood, Richard Lobb and Ben Lobb used their powers of persuasion to make sure the many works of art and other donated items were sold for excellent prices.. Conservation was the ultimate winner as the com- bined efforts of dozens of volunteers resulted in a record-setting amount of money being raised Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority communi- cations specialist Tim Cumming said $44,000 was raised at the dinner, almost $5,000 more than last year's dinner The event is co-sponsored by the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation and the Exeter Lions Club. Dinner chairman Ernie Miatello said the dinner would not be a success without the numerous volun- teers, donors, sponsors, and guests. As well as paintings and other works of art by local talent, bidders had a chance to buy a variety of donat- ed items including the clock from the former PUC building in Exeter. Tieman brought a few "special" items to add to the auction including a couple of one of a kind hockey sweaters (half Toronto and half Montreal), an auto- graphed stick from the Montreal Canadiens and a trip by train to see the Canadiens play. The audience heard how Tieman has battled cancer, meningitis and a quintuple heart bypass operation. He quoted his long-time friend Red Storey who said there is no such thing as a bad day ... some are just better than others. "This was a good day," Tieman concluded.
