EXETER — Two teams from South Huron
District High School recently had success at
the Huron -Perth Regional Envirothon at
Camp Silvan.
The so-called `environmental Olympics'
were held April 20, with South Huron's
Grade 12 team winning the event, picking up
top marks in the areas of soil, wildlife and
their presentation. The Grade 11 team won
the "Ecosystem Award," an acknowledge-
ment of their sportsmanship and teamwork.
The winning team of Jessie Oke, Brittany
Pilgrim, Merissa Thompson, Courtney
Hrudka and Cheryl Davey will represent the
Avon Maitland District School Board at the
provincial Envirothon competition in
Sudbury May 10-13.
In the Huron -Perth event, students had to
study up on their knowledge of aquatics,
soils, forestry and wildlife. Students were
presented with an issue and had one hour to
prepare for a 10 minute presentation on the
issue. South Huron's group presented on cli-
mate change and water stewardship.
The Grade 11 team consisted of Justine
VanEsbroeck, Jeff Hotson, Jerry Rundle,
Justine Johnston and Jessica Brown.
Fourteen school teams were involved in the
competition, which is put on by the Ontario
Forestry Association. All teams are spon-
sored by the Huron Stewardship Council,
represented by Steve Bowers at the Clinton
Ministry of Natural Resources. The Ausable
Bayfield and Maitland Valley Conservation
Authorities, as well as the Hullett Wildlife
area also help with the event, putting on two
days of workshops before the competition.
The Grade 12 team is now preparing for
the provincial competition in Sudbury and
teacher Melanie McCowan said this is the
first time a South Huron team will compete
at the provincials.
She said the tests will be longer and more
involved and students will have to learn
about Sudbury's environmental issues such
as mining and forestry.
Huron OPP Spring Seatbelt Campaign
HURON — Huron OPP checked 13,240 vehi-
cles between April 15 and April 23 during this
year's Spring Seatbelt Campaign, an increase
of 25 per cent in comparison to last year's
7,895 vehicles checked.
A total of 161 child seats were checked and
found to be properly used in accordance with
the Highway Traffic Act and installation man-
uals.
A total of 130 seatbelt charges were issued,
an increase from 73 in 2005.
The success of the OPP seatbelt campaign
initiatives will be judged by the year round use
of seatbelts by the motoring public and the
subsequent reduction of serious injury and
death attributed to non -seatbelt usage.
The fatality rate of unbelted occupants in
fatal collisions investigated by the OPP in 2005
was just above 25 per cent.
In 2006 the rate of non -seatbelt use in fatali-
ties has dropped to 15 per cent to date.
OPP officers from across the province
checked 802,947 vehicles this year.
A total of 9,194 charges were laid during
this eight-day safety campaign.
Ben and Scott Turner, with their dad Tom were some of the 1st Exeter
