Watson in Ukraine
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — A former
South Huron District
High School student is
spending the summer
in the Ukraine as part
of the Intercordia pro-
gram, a cultural
exchange and service
learning program
through L'Arche
Canada and Canada
World Youth.
Sarah Watson, 18, is
a political science stu-
dent at Western
University and says
she became involved in
the program last fall
after seeing a presen-
tation in one of her
courses.
Watson is leaving
May 5 to spend the
summer in Chernobyl
working at an orphan-
age and staying with a
host family. Applying
for the program
involved two inter-
views
Watson said although
there were different
options available for
countries to work in
but she wanted to con-
tinue her track and
field training and
chose the Ukraine
instead of a warmer
climate such as
Honduras or Ecuador.
Other potential desti-
nations included Belize
and Bosnia.
It is the first such trip
for Watson who said
she had always wanted
to but never had the
resources for it.
"A lot of the pro-
grams go for a
year...three months I
thought was pretty
good."
A new part of the
program this year are
five weeks of language
and cultural training
once the students
arrive in the Ukraine.
"Our families we're
staying with don't
speak any English at
all so we'll go through
that so it's an easier
transition."
Watson said she orig-
inally thought the pro-
gram would tie in with
her social justice
course but is consider-
ing international law
and says the experi-
ence will give her lan-
guage skills and inter-
national experience
which will help her
future plans.
