Record numbers for baseball
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Exeter base-
ball is looking at a record
number of players this year
with president Dave Reid
saying the league should hit
200 players, up from 90 in
2000.
As well as a record num-
ber of players, Reid said the
league has a Bantam/Midget
combination for the first
time since the early '90s and
a Midget team for the first
time in several years.
At the youngest level,
Exeter Baseball has 30 play-
ers in blastball which covers
kids born between 2001 to
2003 and the six blastball
teams play Saturday morn-
ing.
The Junior Rookie division
has 70 kids playing but Reid
said there is always room
for more.
There are six Junior
Rookie teams this year as
well as a competitive team
for the first time.
Thirteen players make up
the Senior Rookie team
which is the first year for
OBA competition.
At the Mosquito level, over
30 players make up two
house league teams as well
as a Rep team while there is
one competitive Peewee
team and one house league.
Everything is getting
underway this week,
according to Reid and the
league is happy with its
numbers as well as the two
senior teams this year and
especially its new pitching
machine donated by Tim
Hortons.
Anyone wishing to register
their children can contact
Reid at 235-0670.

Express looking strong
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter Express
will have some old and new faces
in the lineup this year when they
open their season May 13 with a
double header in Tillsonburg
before their home opener May 19
versus Strathroy.
Manager Doug Fairbairn says the
Express will have six or seven new
players this season and the pitch-
ing is looking good with lefthander
Nate Burns back with the team
after an absence of several years.
"He's a real good player and a
good outfielder and a good lefthand
pitcher so that's a big plus."
The Express have also added
some players who have moved up
from Junior, including Justin
Hayter. "He's a real good hitter
that kid," said Fairbairn.
"We got most of our key guys
back from last year so I think we're
going to be pretty strong...defmitely
a little stronger than we were last
year."
The Express were scheduled to
have an exhibition game this week-
end in Stratford which was can-
celled due to Stratford starting its
regular season play.
The Express Slo-Pitch tourna-
ment fundraiser will be held again
May 26-28 with 16 men's teams
and 12 ladies teams in the tourna-
ment.
Fairbairn said the team is aiming
to hit .500 and then go from there.
"In this league I shoot for .500
every year, because quite honestly
we're in over our head. This league
is pretty strong so us being a `D'
team I figure if we can play .500
we've been pretty successful."
The Express went 11-13 last sea-
son but Fairbairn said the team
was missing Derek Masse for most
of the summer,
"He's good for a win a week. If
we had had him we would proba-
bly have been well over .500. This
year he's ready and his brother
Danny is ready and we've got
Lonnie Hawke.
Fairbairn said Hawke has recov-
ered from shoulder problems "He's
back in shape and ready to throw
for us. We're looking pretty good
for pitching."
Although the Express are looking
solid, according to Fairbairn, they
are ready to look at new players.
"If somebody comes out of the
woodwork and is a pretty good
player, we'd look at him."
The Express will also be work
closely with the new senior team in
Exeter being put together by Jeff
Keller.
"He's got a couple of guys who
would be pitching with us, but Jeff
and I agreed they'd get more work
on his team than they would on
ours. So he is going to take them
during the year then I'm going to
take them come OBA time."
Exeter Crokinole tournament
EXETER — Local crokinole play-
ers will have the chance to show off
their skills and win some prize
money May 13 at a tournament
being organized by Joe Fulop who
said several of the top players in
Ontario have already signed up.
Fulop said the game has been
good to him over the years, and
wanting to give something back he
decided to set up a local tourna-
ment since there were none
between April 8 and June 3.
The tournament is to be held at
South Huron District High School at
12:30 p.m. with an entry fee of $10
unless entrants can supply a board
and card table in which case the
entry fee will be waived.
Anyone wishing to supply boards
and tables should contact Fulop by
Saturday.
Fulop said the prize money will be
$200 for first place, $100 for sec-
ond, $60 for third and $40 for
fourth if there is a 20 person round
robin format.
If there are more than 20 entries
the prize money will be raised to
include money for 'B' pool players.
Refreshments will be provided
midway through the tournament
and the deadline for entries is May
10.
