The annual award is pre- sented to the ECHL player judged to be the most valu- able to his team as voted by the coaches of the ECHL teams. The 24 -year-old native of Hensall was named first team All- ECHL April 5 after being named to the ECHL All -Rookie team a year ago. He was fifth in the league with 53 assists and 83 points in 62 games while he was tied for second with seven game -winning goals and five shorthand goals. He also played seven games in the American Hockey League with Lowell scoring two points in seven games. Selected to the ECHL All- Star Game in each of his first two seasons, Campbell tied for second in the voting for the ECHL Sportsmanship award and is the only player in Gladiators history to post back-to-back 30 -goal sea- sons. Gwinnett was 50-15-7 and finished first in the American Conference and third overall with 107 points. The Gladiators tied the 2004-05 Pensacola Ice Pilots for the sixth -highest point total in ECHL history and became only the ninth team in league history to win 50 games. Gwinnett set team records for wins (50), home wins (29) and road wins (21). Speaking to the Gwinnett Daily Post, Campbell deflected the praise onto his teammates and Jeff Campbell made it clear there was a bigger prize on his mind. "I'm sure in five, six years I'll look back at it and it'll mean a lot more to me then," Campbell said. "But right now the team trophy is what we're after, the Kelly Cup. "The MVP award is just a great tribute to the team I was on this year. There are a ton of guys on this team that could have got the award just as easily as I could have. Playing with all the guys I played with makes it a lot easier to be the most valuable player." Campbell, who set a new team record and ranked among the league's top five with 83 points this season, was surprised by the honour. Campbell noticed the differ- ence when he was playing for the Lock Monsters last month. "Top to bottom the quality of players was really good and with the rule changes, it was easier to play in some ways for a guy of my size," Campbell said. "It was definitely a great experience and hopefully I can get back to that level next year." Gwinnet head coach Jeff Pyle wasn't surprised by the award. "You know what, that's the most deserving award that you could even imagine in this league this year," Pyle said. "Because as much as he's carried us at center, at wing ...wherever you put him, it doesn't matter."
