Box 850 Metroland Exeter, Ontario NOM 1S6 • (519) 235-1331 EDITORIAL Great effort Hats off to the volunteers, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, local businesses and the local municipalities for helping make last Saturday's cleanup of the Hay Swamp area a success. It is community efforts like this that make our community a bet- ter and more beautiful place. More than 50 volunteers helped clean up over 12,000 pounds of illegally dumped garbage in the Hay Swamp area, removing bags of garbage, furniture, scrap metal and tires. Bags of asbestos tiles were even found. That the cleanup took place on Earth Day made the day even more fitting. Last weekend's efforts will go a long way towards making our area a more attractive place and, with the removal of the asbestos and scrap metal, a safer place. It's unfortunate the cleanup had to take place. It's too bad we live in a world in which people abuse nature and show a lack of respect for the environment by dumping garbage illegally because it's convenient for them. How would these people feel if somebody dumped a load of junk on their front lawn? With the Hay Swamp area now cleaned up, let's hope it stays that way and last weekend's cleanup never has to take place again. A tough spot Monday's news that South Huron has been denied a two-thirds COMRIF grant to help fund a proposed Crediton/Centralia sewer project is a serious blow to the project's future. Residents of the two villages have already voiced their opposition to the costs of the "user pay" project, estimated to cost $5.8 million. Without a grant, the residents would be on the hook for the entire cost. Will they want the municipality to go ahead with the project without a grant? That's doubtful, but there is a possibility the Ministry of the Environment and the Health Unit could insist the project go ahead. Council is to discuss the issue Monday night. It should be interesting. About the Times -Advocate A SINGLE? You CAN JOIN THE FINAL THREESOM OF 71.1E GROUP ON THE TEE•0 ': 2006 Distributed by Canadian _Artists Syndicate Inc. Ending on a high note My love for music came at a young age. I was just a wee little thing, a few weeks old. My mom and I were living in Holland where my favourite program was something very close to Toronto's Much Music. My mom says I used to watch that program almost everyday, happily listening, smiling and shaking my legs to the various music videos. She also says that when the d.j. would begin talking, I would start to cry until another video was played. After moving to Canada and eventually ending up in Nairn at East Williams Public, music class was part of our weekly activities. We mainly sang songs and learned to play the recorder — both of which I was terrible at. First of all I can't sing to save my life, never could. And honestly I truly disliked the recorder. But I still so badly wanted to play something. I knew my singer/recorder career would end in Grade 8, something I was thankful for, so once Grade 9 hit I begged my parents for a keyboard. They bought me one and encouraged me to learn. Well, they tried but my keyboarding phase quickly fizzled. Actually, myself and my three best friends did start a band called Shine. Unfortunately it didn't go anywhere because none of us could play any instruments. Next I tried the guitar. I thought for sure I'd be play- ing like Jimi Hendrix in no time. My good friend came over several times, trying to teach me on his acoustic. Unfortunately — not my friend's fault — I didn't learn a thing with the exception of the beginning of "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and part of a Nirvana song, which I absolutely don't remember anymore. So feeling like a failure, I left the "music business" temporarily. But after a couple of years I began paying closer attention to the drums. And after learning a few basic beats from one of my friends, I decided this is definitely something I'd like to do. So again, my parents bought me drums for my college graduation present. At first I thought, I'll just teach myself, how hard can it be anyways? Ha, right...I'm sure everyone will be happy to know I'm in the midst of taking lessons. Well, I'm sure my parents and neighbours are thank- ful. I've only taken a couple of lessons but I've already learned so much from my teacher. And something truly satisfying is that finally after singing, the recorder, the keyboard and the guitar, I have found an instrument I can truly appreciate and enjoy. So with quite a few more lessons, I'm sure my musi- cal journey will be ending on a high note. And I'm sure my parents and neighbours will also appreciate and enjoy the drums too, maybe.
