Marie, of Grand Bend, is honoured to have been select- ed to be the featured artist for this year's dinner gala Thursday. Marie's painting, a vividly -coloured oil called 'Big Red', will be showcased at the dinner. The artist has been painting for 14 years, and has recently been painting rural landscapes along with her usual portrait paintings. Marie says that she has recently become "fascinated with our rural landscape in the area" and has been inspired to paint 'Big Red' and many other paintings. "I got the idea while driving along a local country road," Marie said. "The tree looked unique and the colours thrilled me." Marie's love for life and love for painting make her works flamboyant and beautiful. She is not afraid to use strong colours, and loves the different ways the light reacts to it. "It's all about light for me — how light reacts to and effects the colours of the tree," Marie said when speak- ing about 'Big Red.' Marie says that after doing some travelling, then returning to her rural roots, she sees the local areas dif- ferently. "I'm noticing the amazing, vibrant colours. I have been painting these stunning rural landscapes that include rivers, trees and fields." Marie, one of the founding members of The River Road Gallery, is also a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists as well as the Canadian Society of Portrait Artists. She has participated in many juried shows including the Toronto Portrait Society Show, Art Mart at the London Regional Art Gallery and Paint the Huron Shores. Marie's work has also been featured in International Artist Magazine's "Master Painters of the World, Canada Showcase." Marie, who is a strong supporter of conservation efforts, has donated to the Conservation Dinner for the past eight years. She says her painting and involvement in the Conservation Dinner has given her the chance to share her support and love for the environment. "I'm inspired by the planet as a whole; the trees, the air, the water, the wildlife, the people," Marie said. "I think the more we can do for conservation, the better our world will be and if I can contribute in this way, then I'm pleased to do my part." This year is the 17th Annual Conservation Dinner and raises funds for barrier -free trail develop- ment, outdoor education programs, and many other activities. Proceeds made at the dinner gala will continue to assist in the stocking of rainbow trout in Morrison Dam, supporting conservation education programs, and maintaining the six Commemorative Wood sites and the South Huron Trail project. Free car seat safety check in Exeter EXETER — Eric Campbell Ford Lincoln in Exeter is hosting a free car seat safety check Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary. The Huron County Health Unit issued a news release with information and tips regarding car seats: • Children must be secured in an infant - only or infant/child convertible seat until they weigh 40 lbs (18 kg) or are 40 inches tall (101 cm); • The seat should be rear -facing until the child is at least one -year-old and weighs 22 lbs (10 kg). The seat at that point can then be turned around; • Booster seats are mandatory for children who are too big for toddler seats and too small to be protected by seatbelts; • A booster is used for preschool and school -aged children weighing 40-80 lbs (18- 36 kg). It helps position the lap/shoulder belt properly over the shoulders and thighs to help prevent an internal injury in a crash; • A seatbelt alone can be used when the child is at least eight years of age and over 80 lbs (36 kg) or has a standing height of at least four feet nine inches; • Children should continue to use a booster seat as long as possible. Some booster seats can be safely used until the child is 100 lbs (45.5 kg); • Always check manufacturer's instruc- tions; vtUP B9 v4 a • Children not properly restrained in booster seats are three and a half times more likely to suffer signifi- cant injury and four times more o likely to suffer a head injury; %ct OS • Children under 12 years of age are safest in the back seat of the vehi- cle. They should be properly restrained at all times; • Safety rules involving car restraints can be confusing. Not only is it important to use a car seat or booster seat, but the appropriate restraint must be used for the child's weight and age; The Huron County Health Unit conducts car seat inspection checks across the county.
