Irish Junior Dchamps with 5-4 win
By Pat Bolen

LUCAN — "You should
relish the challenge and
when you get down two
or three goals...some-
times it's more reward-
ing when you can over-
come those kinds of
deficits," said Lucan Irish
coach Jason Heywood.
And down 3-0 in the
early minutes of game six
to the Delhi Travellers
Friday night, it looked
like the Irish would be
going to game seven of
the Ontario Junior `D'
final.
But like they have
throughout their playoff
run this spring, the Irish
refused to lose and
roared back for a 5-4 win
to claim their fifth cham-
pionship and first since
2000.
The Irish took a 3-2
series lead April 12 in
Delhi with a 3-1 win in
game five before coming
back to Lucan Friday
night looking to claim the
title.
But the Travellers did-
n't go easily as they took
the 3-0 lead in the first
period on goals from
Mark Lunghi, Josh
Reneboog and Darryl
Getchell and looked like
they would take the
series home for a seventh
and deciding game.
Heywood said the
Travellers were deter-
mined and came out
hard in the opening peri-
od and the Irish were a
bit nervous in front of the
large home town crowd.
But Trevor Liddle got
the Irish on the board in
the first minute of the
second period.
The Travellers
responded to restore
their three -goal lead but
Liddle again got the Irish
close less than a minute
later.
"When we got to 3-1 I
had a good feeling about
it," said Heywood.
"Anytime you can bring
the crowd into the game
it helps you and hinders
them."
Kevin Dean cut the
margin to 4-3 before the
period was over and just
18 seconds into the third
it was tied on a goal from
Jeff Silver.
With overtime looming
at 18:29, Shawn Williams
tipped home a shot to
give the Irish a 5-4 win
and the championship.
Heywood said the cru-
cial game of the series
was game five when
Lucan went into Delhi
and won.
"We always knew we
could skate with them
and beat them. The prob-
lem was we had to
respect what they could
do and after games three
and four we realized they
were a good hockey club
and we had to play a bit
better to win."
The Lucan Irish claimed the Ontario Junior `D' title April 14 in Lucan with a come -from -behind 5-4 win to
defeat the Delhi Travellers in six games. Front from left, Joel Morrison, Matt Blane, Corey Hackney, Kyle Smith

Atom Girls take provincial silver
EXETER — The South
Huron Sabres brought
home silver from the
provincial tournament in
Toronto recently.
The Sabres qualified
for the provincial tourna-
ment after a 12 game
playdown schedule in
February representing
the Huron -Perth -Grey -
Bruce area.
The Sabres opened the
tournament with a hard
fought 1-1 tie against the
Napanee Crunch.
Shutout goaltending by
Cassy Northover pow-
ered the girls to a 3-0
win over the Barrie
Sharks.
The Sabres played well
against a strong Windsor
Wildcat team but
Windsor won 2-1 with a
late game goal.
In the quarter -final
round South Huron came
up against an undefeated
Kincardine team.
Outstanding goaltend-
ing and defence shut
down the strong
Kincardine team.
Hailey Slaght played a
strong role by shadowing
Kincardine's number 17
and scoring the game
winning goal with .09
seconds on the clock in
the second period.
Rachel Robinson scored
an open net goal to elim-
inate Kincardine with a
Sabres 2-0 win.
The semi-final game
had Northover, support-
ed by defensive walls
Lindsay Dalrymple,
Lauryn Overholt, Nicole
Willis and Bailey Oud to
get her third shut out of
the tournament.
The Sabres defeated
Clarington 1-0 with the
game winning goal
scored by Renee Quick
assisted by a great effort
by Emily (Tiger) Wells.
The South Huron girls
played Woolwich in the
gold medal game.
It was a great job by
Heather Godkin, both
offensively and defen-
sively, helping the Sabres
with her strong play.
A goal with 58 seconds
left in the first put
Woolwich ahead but the
Sabres battled back with
great work by Jenna
Dawson passing the puck
to Emma Prout who
scored the game's tying
goal at 4:52 in the sec-
ond period.
With 2:55 left in the
game Megan Dalrymple
set up Hailey Slaght to
put the girls ahead 2-1.
Woolwich's number
five scored with 1:20 left
in the game to go into
overtime.
Woolwich won the
game with two minutes
left in the second over-
time period.
It was a tough loss to a
fantastic hockey game.
The coaches are proud
of the team's accom-
plishments and special
thanks go to the moms,
dads,brothers, sisters,
aunts, uncles, grandmas,
and grandpas for all
their support.
Congratulations girls
on a fantastic finish to a
great season.
