From April 24-28, students and their families are chal- lenged to turn off their screens (TVs, computers and video games) except for homework or work purposes. The participants are encouraged to get out and get active instead of sitting watching a screen. There will be over 50 free activities offered during the week. Each student interested in taking part in Turn Off The Screens Week will receive a log sheet, which will be signed by a parent or guardian to show that you really were screen -free. Be sure to record on your log sheet the activity that you chose to do instead of turning on a screen. All log sheets must be returned to your school or the Health Unit by May 11, and will be put into a ran- dom draw for prizes. Some of the prizes that can be won in Huron County include gift certificates, T-shirts and frisbees, with a grand prize of $150 gift certificate for sports equipment. A school staff member could have the chance to win a $50 gift certificate for an Eat Smart! restaurant in Huron County. Physical activity resources will be award- ed to each elementary school where 25 per cent or more of students and staff participate. Prizes up for grabs for the top winners in the Middlesex area may include: • One year family membership to the London YMCA; • 50 family day passes to any London YMCA; • City of London Schools Out Golf Membership package; • Four $40 certificates for any City of London Spectrum program; • Two family passes for Storybook Gardens; • 15 child day passes for Storybook gardens; • 25 basketballs, soccer balls and footballs; • 25 Healthy Living water bottles; • 10 Turn off The Screens Week T-shirts. There will be prizes for the top five participating schools as well. Obesity rates are getting higher, and children need to get out of the habit of plopping down on the couch in front of the television, when there is so much to do out- side. One of the largest reasons that Turn Off The Screens Week is held is to teach students and families there are more things to be done than just sitting down in front of a screen. "Although Turn Off The Screens Week is only one week in the course of a year, it hopefully encourages families to get up and moving and to make physical activity a part of their family's daily routine," Kim Ross - Jones from the Huron County Health Unit said. "Being active is fun and makes you feel great; it's also essential for good health." If you and your family are interested in taking part in Turn Off The Screens Week, be sure to participate. Every elementary student and staff member will receive a log sheet from their school, or log sheets can be obtained at the Huron County Health Unit.
