Travellers even series with Irish
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — The Lucan
Irish and Delhi Travellers
are down to a best of
three series in their
Junior 'D' Ontario final.
The Travellers rebound-
ed from a 2-0 series
deficit with a pair of wins
on the weekend to tie the
series with game five
tonight (Wednesday) in
Delhi at 7:30 p.m.
Game six of the series
will be Friday night in
Lucan at 7:30 p.m with
game seven if necessary
Saturday in Delhi at 7:30
p.m.
The Irish took a 2-0
lead in the series April 5
in Lucan with a dramatic
7-6 come from behind
overtime win.
The Travellers rebound-
ed Friday night in Lucan
with a 4-1 win and tied
the series Sunday after-
noon, beating the irish 3-
1.
Lucan coach Jason
Heywood said the win
Friday night gave the
Travellers confidence
going into game four
Sunday.
"They're a young club
and they gain confidence
every shift and every
game. And as an older
team you have to learn
how to knock them down
a few pegs. And usually
with physical play that
works."
Wednesday night in
Lucan, the Travellers
were ahead 2-0 just three
minutes into the first
period on goals by Darryl
Getchell and Scott Stefan.
But a power play mark-
er by Trevor Liddle cut
the lead in half midway
through the period before
the teams traded six
goals in the second peri-
od.
Jeremy Montag, Aaron
Whitcomb, Bob Martin
and Jeff Silver fired goals
for the Irish in the second
with Delhi responding
with two goals giving the
Irish a 5-4 lead going into
the third period.
The lead held up for
only 30 seconds in the
period as the Travellers
tied it in the first minute
before taking the lead
midway through the peri-
od.
But with eight minutes
left and Lucan trying to
kill a five minute Delhi
power play, Martin's shot
from the blueline eluded
Delhi goalie Mike
Davidson to tie the score
at six and send the game
to overtime.
Trevor Medeiros proved
to be the hero five min-
utes into the extra period
beating Davidson with an
assist from Whitcomb to
give the Irish the 7-6 win.
Friday night the
Travellers fired one goal
in the first, one in the sec-
ond and two in the third
with Liddle firing the lone
goal for the Irish.
Sunday afternoon it was
scoreless for two periods
before Shawn Williams
opened the scoring mid-
way through the third
period for Lucan.
It was all Delhi after
that as the Travellers
fired three goals in the
last 10 minutes for the 3-
1 win to tie the series.
Despite the win
Wednesday night,
Heywood said he didn't
feel the team played well
and went into Friday's
game over confident.
"You forget these guys
are here for a reason and
they've won their
league...they showed
some pride and they
came back."
