At the close of the service Pastor Elly reminded VARNA - The Varna UCW met last Thursday and did a quick spring cleaning of the church. A short business meeting followed. Deb Rathwell opened with a thank you to the ladies that helped in any way. Pastor Elly led in prayer and Deb read a poem "Rain Belongs to April". All ladies brought items from the wish list for Camp Menesetung. Keep saving your Campbell soup labels, CTC money and used eyeglasses and postage stamps. The community will be collecting for Robert Stephenson and Tony Coultis for their upcoming weddings. Next meeting will be May 4. The Varna Crokinole club sent a team consisting of Joe Fullop, Abe Leitch, Conrad Sitter, Bob Russell and Ivan McClymont to the competition at Schneider Haus in Kitchener. The team placed sec- ond out of six teams. Congratulations. Palm Sunday was celebrated at the Varna Church. Pastor Elly invited her former long time neighbour Dorothy Chappel from Exeter to light the Christ Candle to begin worship. The children with marching band instruments in hand followed Steven Consitt, parade leader around the sanctuary in celebration of Jesus, tri- umphal palm parade into Jerusalem. Belated birthday wishes were extended to Blake Reid, birthday everyone of the Maundy Thursday Service, Thursday evening 7:30 pm at the Varna Church and that all who wanted to come and share The Last Supper, in this Holy Week Service were welcome. Sunday was also the day of the 21st annual Canoe Rally and sunny skies brought out 186 participants with 95 canoes regis- tered. Rally winners were: Paul Chambers in 1st place, Brett Holmes coming in 2nd and Al Renning at 3rd. The weather and the river was great making for lots of exercise and good appetites - the Consitt Crew, Barb, Brenda, Scott, Kelly, Kim served up 240 hot dogs. Special thanks to landowners where check points were set up and to the Walpers, Joanne and Willis for use of their trailer for the prizes. And Sunday was also the day of the 10th Carry On Cloggers, show at Blyth. Another excellent show, top notch entertainment. Over the years The Cloggers under the direction of Norma Preszcator have raised over $38,000 for charity. This year's show proceeds will be divided between Cheshire Everyday Dreams, Town & Country Support Services and Saint Elizabeth Health Care. Congratulations to Varna Cloggers; Shawna & Stephanie Faulds, Leisa Stephenson, Deb Rathwell and Marjorie Hayter - well done and carry on! Meanin By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT THAMES ROAD — Mr. Dave Williams was in charge of Palm Sunday church service on Sunday morning. Dave welcomed every- one. The call to worship was 'The Travel to Jerusalem' by James, John and Simon portrayed by Brett Warwick, John Batten and Gerald Cunnington. Dave gave the announcements and Sharon Lynn gave a minute for coun- cil. Dave gave the gathering prayer and `Matthew, Peter and Judas - Discussion After The Parade' was portrayed by Dennis Pym, Murray Dawson dramatic presentations incorporated into Palm Sunday and Robert Bray. The children's hymn "He Came Riding on a Donkey" was sung and Dave told the youth a story entitled "Parade". Psalm 118:19- 29 was read responsively. Dave read Mark 14:1-9. `Mary, Martha, and Mary Magdalene Gather For Conversation' portrayed by Helen Kadey, Anne Kernick and Virginia Warwick. 'Peter, Matthew and Judas Discuss The Situation' was portrayed by Murray Dawson, Dennis Pym and Robert Bray. Rick and Judith Parker were the greeters and also received the offering. `Peter and Matthew Seek The Upper Room' portrayed by Murray Dawson and Dennis Pym. Dave led the prayers of the people. 'The Setting of the Table - Preparing the Feast - Disciples and The Women" por- trayed by the above men- tioned men and women. The closing hymn "Said Judas to Mary" verses 4 and 5 were sung. Dave gave the commissioning and pronounced the benediction. Everyone sang the closing cho- rus. Everyone was given a palm branch for the very impres- sive service for Palm Sunday. Dave Williams planned the ser- vice. The flowers at the front of the church were placed there by the family of the late Clif Jaques who passed away recently. Sympathy is extended to his wife Leona, d aughter Yvonne and John Elliott and family and son Dalton and Sandi Jaques and family and relatives. Beginning Easter Sunday, the sanctuary will have a "Kiddy Korner" during the wor- ship service when Sunday School is not being provided. Young children are invited to colour at "the corner" or in the pews with fami- ly. Volunteers are being recruited to operate the new sound sys- tem. Training will be provided.
