Church services in Varna for the Easter weekend Public speaking
contest winner
By Joan Beierling wishes of the day to Jason Beierling and for the upcoming week,
VARNA CORRESPONDENT Floyd McAsh. At the close of the service Pastor Elly reminded
VARNA - The Varna UCW met last Thursday and did a quick
spring cleaning of the church. A short business meeting followed.
Deb Rathwell opened with a thank you to the ladies that helped in
any way. Pastor Elly led in prayer and Deb read a poem "Rain
Belongs to April". All ladies brought items from the wish list for
Camp Menesetung. Keep saving your Campbell soup labels, CTC
money and used eyeglasses and postage stamps. The community
will be collecting for Robert Stephenson and Tony Coultis for their
upcoming weddings. Next meeting will be May 4.
The Varna Crokinole club sent a team consisting of Joe Fullop,
Abe Leitch, Conrad Sitter, Bob Russell and Ivan McClymont to the
competition at Schneider Haus in Kitchener. The team placed sec-
ond out of six teams. Congratulations.
Palm Sunday was celebrated at the Varna Church. Pastor Elly
invited her former long time neighbour Dorothy Chappel from
Exeter to light the Christ Candle to begin worship. The children
with marching band instruments in hand followed Steven Consitt,
parade leader around the sanctuary in celebration of Jesus, tri-
umphal palm parade into Jerusalem.
Belated birthday wishes were extended to Blake Reid, birthday
everyone of the Maundy Thursday Service, Thursday evening 7:30
pm at the Varna Church and that all who wanted to come and
share The Last Supper, in this Holy Week Service were welcome.
Sunday was also the day of the 21st annual Canoe Rally and
sunny skies brought out 186 participants with 95 canoes regis-
tered. Rally winners were: Paul Chambers in 1st place, Brett
Holmes coming in 2nd and Al Renning at 3rd. The weather and
the river was great making for lots of exercise and good appetites -
the Consitt Crew, Barb, Brenda, Scott, Kelly, Kim served up 240
hot dogs. Special thanks to landowners where check points were
set up and to the Walpers, Joanne and Willis for use of their trailer
for the prizes.
And Sunday was also the day of the 10th Carry On Cloggers,
show at Blyth. Another excellent show, top notch entertainment.
Over the years The Cloggers under the direction of Norma
Preszcator have raised over $38,000 for charity. This year's show
proceeds will be divided between Cheshire Everyday Dreams,
Town & Country Support Services and Saint Elizabeth Health
Care. Congratulations to Varna Cloggers; Shawna & Stephanie
Faulds, Leisa Stephenson, Deb Rathwell and Marjorie Hayter -
well done and carry on!
