Irish win game
one of D' final
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCA'T'E. STAFF
LUCAN — The Lucan
Irish took a 1-0 lead in
their Junior `D' final
against the Delhi
Travellers Sunday night
with a 4-1 win in Delhi.
The win came after the
Irish disposed of the
Thamesford Trojans in
five games with a 7-4 win
March 28 in Thamesford.
Prior to the game
against Delhi, Lucan
coach Jason Heywood
said the Irish didn't know
what to expect of their
McConnell conference
opponents.
"Anyone who makes it
this far...all 20 guys are
playing well and they are
going to be pretty well
balanced," said
Heywood.
He added the key to the
series will be discipline
with Lucan not wanting
to try and figure out the
Delhi power play "after
they ve scored about
three goals."
Despite Delhi having
compiled a record of 29-
8-3-0 with 180 goals for
and 101 allowed,
Heywood said the Irish
are respectful but not
afraid of the Travellers.
"They're fairly physical
if you look at their penal-
ty minutes...I expect a
team that can do every-
thing well."
With the Irish starting
the series on the road
again, Heywood said
winning the first game
would be important to
winning the series.
"It's definitely going to
go a long way knowing
you're coming home for
two."
The Irish were first on
the board Sunday night
with a power play goal
from Ryan Giffen in the
first period before Kyle
Smith gave the Irish a 2-
0 lead with another
power play marker early
in the second.
The Travellers cut the
lead to one goal in the
last seconds of the sec-
ond period with a goal off
the stick of Dave Mels.
But early in the third
Pat Flood restored the
two -goal lead before
Trevor Medeiros put the
game away with seven
minutes left on a short-
handed marker.
Dan Crowley had a pair
of assists in the win with
Medeiros, Shawn
Williams, Allan St.
Amand, Jeff McLean and
Kyle Roth getting singles.
Game two in the series
goes tonight (Wednesday)
at 7:30 p.m. in Lucan
with game three Friday
night in Lucan also at
7:30 p.m.
Game four of the series
is April 9 at 2 p.m. in
Delhi with game five if
necessary April 12 at
7:30 p.m. in Delhi.
