Literary Essay winner
Justine Johnston, left, a Grade I I student at South Huron District High
School won first place in the Literary Essay Senior Category in the dis-
trict and zone for her essay titled "The Art of Remembering the Italian
Campaign." The essay contest, part of the Royal Canadian Legion Youth
Education Program also earned Johnston second place in the Ontario

Thirty hour famine during Lent

GRANTON CORRESPONDENT
GRANTON - The Lenten Luncheon
for the Lucan and area churches
was held at Granton -Wesley United
Church on Wed., March 29. The
speaker was Rev. Sue McCullough
continuing with the theme of The
Return of the Prodigal
Son, focusing on the
two sons by relating
the relationship of two sisters.
At the Granton -Wesley United
Church on Sun., April 2. Pastor Paul
Vollick led the service. The message
was entitled `Promise, Promise' and
the lessons were from Jeremiah 31,
John 12 and Hebrew 5. Michelle
McBurney lit the Christ Candle.
Mary Waters read a thank you from
places where M and S funds were
sent. The ministry of music was enti-
tled `I have Peace in my Heart'. The
theme of the children's time was
'Can I Change my Heart?' Unit 2
hosted the muffin social before the
service.
Thanks was expressed to all those
who participated in the 30 -hour
Famine from last Friday at noon
until Saturday at 6 p.m. It was spon-
sored by the youth group with a
spaghetti supper.
Donations were in
support of a fund for
those less fortunate and was very
successful.
At the St. Paul's Anglican Church
in Kirkton on Sun., April 2 (Lent 5)
Rev. Dalice Sim celebrated the I-Ioly
Eucharist. The message was that
God dwells within each heart and is
there in times of despair. Ella
Urquhart read the lessons.
The Good Friday service is to be
held at St. Paul's at 10 a.m.

Horticultural Society meeting April 10

HENSALL CORRESPONDENT
HENSALL - The Hensall and Community
Horticultural Society will hold their next
meeting on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Hensall
United Church. This will be
Membership Night and mem-
bers are reminded that the fee
has been raised to $8. Benefits of member-
ship include discounts at many area green-
houses and the opportunity to attend infor-
mative meetings throughout the year. The
speaker for the evening will be Brenda
Campbell of Cozyn's Garden Centre in
Stratford who will conduct a demonstration
of container gardening.
Everyone is welcome, so be sure to attend.
At Hensall United Church, service began
with welcome and announcements and the
passing of the peace. Alun Thomas' mes-
sage was "The Passion of Christ". The
organist was Chuck Mallette. Betty
Simmons was the greeter.
Donna Hamather looked after
the nursery. The ushers were
Pat O'Brien and Cecil Pepper. The service
closed with commissioning, benediction,
and choral amen.
At Carmel Presbyterian Church Trish
MacGregor was the guest minister. Joyce
Pepper looked after the ministry of song.
The offering was received by Harry Smith
and Robert Bell.
