The Lucan Area Heritage's eighth annual Awesome Auction was held Saturday at the Lucan
Community Centre. The event, which included silent, live and raffle auctions, bake tables,
lunch and desserts, made an approximately $10,000 profit for Heritage operating costs.
Auction chairperson Jackie Martens said any money left over will go into the account for
the new planned Heritage and Donnelly Museum. She said she was pleased with Saturday's
turnout, calling it a fun day. Pictured above left are Tom Shoebottom and Ted Lane, while

Property cleanup
costs skyrocket

SOUTH HURON — The cleanup of a former gas bar and restaurant at
the corner of Highway 4 and Crediton Road will now cost more than five
times the price of the original estimate.
The estimated $42,000, six-day job to remove underground fuel storage
tanks ballooned to a new final estimate of $220,000, which includes the
removal of contaminated soil.
As was explained at Monday night's South Huron council meeting, the
job to clean up the site turned out to be much larger than was anticipated.
The property at Devon Corners fell into the municipality's hands after
the former owner defaulted on property taxes. A tax sale auction was
then held, but there were no buyers.
Six underground storage tanks were removed from the site, plus 9,900
tons (or 364 truck loads) of fuel contaminated soil was excavated and
removed. That soil was replaced with 9,150 tons of clean backfill
Also removed were two concrete pump islands, an inground hydraulic
hoist, two septic tanks, an abandoned brick -lined water well and the
building.
Chief administrative officer Larry Brown said the municipality met with
consultant and contractor Bill Rathwell, who "assured us that we received
good value for their services." Brown also stated that fuel site cleanups
often cost over $1 million and had the Devon Corners site been privately

Bluewater candidate
for mayoral position
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
BAYFIELD — The race for the mayoral position in Bluewater has kicked
off with Janet Snider of Bayfield declaring her intention to contest the
position in the November municipal election.
Snider is president of the Bayfield Ratepayers Association (BRA) and has
been a member for four years.
She says she has been considering running for mayor since last fall.
It is the first run at municipal politics for Snider but with her experience
in the BRA Snider says she is familiar with the issues and enjoys keeping
people informed.
A retired teacher as well as an author and publisher, Snider grew up in
Sarnia and lived in Beechville and Toronto before moving to Bayfield eight
years ago.
"I think it's a good time," said Snider of her decision to run for mayor.
"I have good people I can call on for information...I'm a negotiator and
good at getting people to work together. I think that's something that
might be necessary for a more positive situation in council.
"And I like a challenge," said Snider.
