Thames Road welcomes the healing of spring

THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT
THAMES ROAD — The March meeting of the UCW
was held on Tuesday evening with 26 ladies present.
The meeting table had an orange tablecloth on it with
a shamrock plant, a pot of tulips and a statue of a little
green man. A Happy St. Patrick's Day poster hung on
the post, across the back of the basement were two
beautiful daffodils in gold pots on high pedestals and a
greenery plant.
Helen Kadey welcomed everyone and opened the
meeting with a poem "Ode To Healing Spring". Helen
read "Customs of Other Countries For Spring" and
"Spring Almost Here".
The ladies sang "Walk Softly in Springtime" accom-
panied by the pianist Marjorie Johns. The ladies put
purple mantels around their shoulders and had spring
clothes on.
Kay Cunnington read the scripture Luke 19:1-9 and
Lenten reflection and a prayer.
Sharon Passmore and Helen Kadey received the
offering with prayer by Kay Cunnington. The ladies
sang "As Comes the Breath of Spring".
Sharon Passmore put a St. Patrick's head piece on
her head, and read the history of St. Patrick and every-
one sang "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" Sharon read
about the Shamrock, Leprechauns, Blarney Stone and
The Irish Blessing which were very informative.
Tickets were drawn for the tulips and shamrock plant
and Grace Pym and Diane Jeffery were the winners.
Kay Cunnington wore a green hat along with Helen
Kadey.
Sandra Rowe assisted setting up the meeting but was
unable to be at the meeting so Sharon Passmore took
her part.
Joyce Fulton, vice president opened the business part
of the meeting with a reading "The Lazy Persons Guide
to Happiness".
The UCW purpose was repeated in unison. The roll
call was answered by "your favorite winter Olympic
sport."
The minutes were read and adopted. Joan Skinner
gave the treasurer's report. Heads of the standing
committees gave their reports.
Doris Elford, Marjorie Johns and Grace Pym attended
the Annual meeting of the UCW at Ontario St. UC,
Clinton in February. They each gave interesting
reports of the meeting.
Virginia Warwick talked about Belaruse. The special
events of the UCW will be held on April 5 at Central
UC, Stratford.
Everyone said the UCW prayer. A delicious dessert
and beverage prepared by Joyce Fulton, Sharon
Passmore, Virginia Warwick, and Marion Cann was
partaken of which brought an enjoyable evening to a
close.
CHURCH SERVICE
Dave Williams was in charge of the third Sunday of
Lent church service on Sunday morning.
An Easter introit was sung and Dave gave words of
welcome while everyone shook hands. Dave Williams
lit the Christ candle and gave the announcements and
led in the Call to Worship responsively. Corey Smith
led in the gathering prayer responsively.
The gathering hymn "Spirit of God, Descend Upon My
Heart" was sung. Dave gave the prayer of confession
and hope.
The Affirmation of our Faith - 'A New Creed' was
read in unison. The children's hymn "When I Survey
the Wonderous Cross" was sung.
Dave told a story "The Golden Rule". The choir sang
"I Know a Font" accompanied by the pianist Jean
Hodgert.
Psalm 19 was read responsively. Dave read John
2:13-22 and the title of his meditation was
"Overturning the Tables and Upsetting the Apple Cart".
The hymn of praise "Seek Ye First" was sung. Don
and Janis Richardson received the offering. The dos-
ing hymn "May the God of Hope" was sung.
Dave gave the Commissioning and pronounced the
Benediction. Everyone sang the closing chorus.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The stewardship committee is organizing a visitation
to take place during the month of April, to share the
life and work of our church.
Sunday School dates: April 9, May 14 and June 4
April 23 Food Grain Service at Exeter United
Church. No service at Thames Road - Elimville.
April 30 Confirmation service at 10 a.m. at Usborne
Central School. This service will be celebrated jointly
be Zion West, Woodham, Kirkton and Thames Road -
Elimville United Churches.

vices at Thames Road - Elimville at 7:30 p.m.

ZURICH - Once again the
Zurich Skating Carnival
was a big success!! The
theme being "Skate and
Shout" with great music
and costumes. Skaters
both young and old, the
executive, and anyone
else, involved in making
this a wonderful show are
to be congratulated on a
job well done. The Master
of Ceremonies was John
Becker.
There were several win-
ners from a penny table
that had lots of lovely
donated articles. The
50/50 draw worth $130
was won by Paul Bedard,
Junior.
The H.O.M.E. Bursary
Show (skater of the year
from each club) will be
held at the Exeter Arena
on Fri., April 7 at 7 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to
see this Ice Show. This
year Amanda Kelland will
represent the Zurich Club.
Skater of the year for the
Zurich Club is Jana -Lynn
Ramer. The club is now
preparing for their general
meeting and awards ban-
quet. It is chaired by
President Heather Klopp

ENJOY.
TOFFEE NUTTY SQUARE
1/2 cup butter
1-1/2 cups of graham cracker crumbs (or chocolate
cookie crumbs or 1/2 and 1/2 )
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 pkg (200 g) toffee bits
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips
3/4 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cup sliced almonds
Place butter in a 13 by 9 inch baking dish and bake at 350 till
butter melts. Layer cracker crumbs and remaining 5
ingredients in the order given. Firmly press mixture in dish.
Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes till lightly browned. Cool
completely in dish on a wire rack. Cut into squares. WOW!!

annual March Break holi-
day. A chance to get away

This year I travelled by
bus to Sudbury where I
stayed with my aunt
Madeline Arbour for a
week in Chelmsford, also
visited with a cousin
Lucille and Dan Sweeney
and family in Sudbury.
The weather was sunny
but they still have lots of
snow.

HURON — Huron OPP
responded to a call of
youths playing on ice.
Police request parents dis-
cuss the dangers of play-
ing near ice or fast flowing
streams. Ice is never a 100
per cent safe and during
the winter and spring
thaw, ice and waterways
become a serious danger
for children.
FREE WORKSHOP: Ability Awareness Training

Ability Awareness Training is about educating the community regarding the
abilities of persons with disabilities and the barriers persons with
disabilities experience in their day-to-day lives.
