EXETER —
The board of
directors meet-
ing
of the
Ausable Bayfield
Conservation
Authority
(ABCA) was held
March 16 at the
ABCA adminis-
tration offices at
Morrison Dam
with communi-
cations specialist
Tim Cummings
briefing the
board on a draft
communications
strategy for the
ABCA.
Cummings told
the directors
there are plans
to improve the
ABCA website,
"making it like a
little newspa-
per," to better
promote the
organization.
Other ideas
Cummings men-
tioned were an
ad plan, saying
some advertis-
ing has been
done and it is a
matter of finding
out what works
and what does-
n't and using its
budget effective-
ly.
Cummings
added he would
like staff to have
media training
to allow the
ABCA to "con-
centrate on the
key messages
we want to focus
on."
Cummings also
mentioned
newer methods
of communica-
tion such as high
resolution video
that could be
beamed to tele-
vision stations as
well as older
methods such as
public surveys
on what people
think and know
about the ABCA.
In response to
a question about
why some ABCA
land doesn't
have signs and
whether it
would be a way
to raise the pro-
file of the ABCA,
stewardship and
conservation
lands supervisor
Kate Monk said
the properties
had signs which
were stolen.
The communi-
cations plan was
adopted by the
board.

One of Montreal's 'best
personalities' returns
EXETER — A Montreal Mirror readers' poll in 2004
declared CFCF sportscaster Randy Tieman one of
Montreal's top five 'Best Sports Personalities.'
The South Huron District High School graduate was in
illustrious company along with people such as Montreal
Canadiens hockey players including captain Saku Koivu,
Mike Ribeiro and former Habs goaltender Jose
Theodore.
In fact, Tieman was higher on the list than Grey Cup -
winning Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony
Calvillo.
Tieman is coming back home to Exeter April 27 to
emcee the Conservation Dinner fundraising gala of the
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation and the
Exeter Lions Club.
Answering the call for a worthwhile charity is nothing
new for Tiernan. He has actively supported many chari-
table causes including the Alzheimer Society, the
Foundation for Research into Children's Diseases and
many others.
When his home town and home watershed came call-
ing, he said 'yes' once again.
Tieman has worked the last 22 years at CFCF Montreal
as a sports broadcaster. His broadcast career includes
six years in radio followed by the last 16 in television.
"Over the years I have covered the Expos, Canadiens,
Alouettes of the CFL and just about every international
event going that has been in our city," said the Exeter -
area native and Montreal -area resident.
"I did play by play on radio for four years of the
Montreal Canadiens," he said. "I'll also do sportscasts at
six and late on different occasions."
Tieman hosts a weekly Horse Show on CTV. Before
working in Montreal, he was the sports director at CFGO
Radio in Ottawa for seven years and prior to that worked
at CKY in Winnipeg and CHLO in St. Thomas.
Tieman is a graduate of Fanshawe College in London
and South Huron District High School and is returning to
the area because he feels it is important to give back to
his community.
A collaboration of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Foundation and the Exeter Lions Club, the Conservation
Dinner April 27 raises funds for development of barrier -
free trails, outdoor education programs and many other
activities for the benefit of local watershed residents.
The proceeds from the 2006 Dinner will continue to
assist in the stocking of rainbow trout in the Morrison
Dam reservoir, supporting conservation education pro-
grams and the maintenance of six commemorative
woods sites and the South Huron Trail System.
