OFA has mixed reaction on funding
ONTARIO - The recent funding
announcement from the provincial
government provided a mixture of
good news and bad news for
Ontario agriculture, according to
an Ontario Federation of
Agriculture news release.
For producers of fruits and veg-
etables, it was good news.
Agriculture Minister Leona
Dombrowsky stepped forward and
acknowledged what the sector had
identified as needed support to
cover the losses from the 2005
crop.
Grains and oilseeds producers
have a much different view of the
province's attempt to satisfy their
income shortfall on the 2005 crop.
When the federal government's
$120 million from last fall is com-
bined with this week's $80 million
from the province, it means these
producers are being paid 40 cents
on the dollar.
OFA and its Unified Voice part-
ners will continue their attempts to
work with governments to flesh out
their plan for agriculture by lobby-
ing their efforts to convince our
governments to recognize and
accept the solutions that farmers
have developed and put forward.
The OFA will continue to lobby
provincial and federal governments
to respond with programs that will
carry agriculture through to 2008
when the next agricultural policy
framework is due.
The OFA believes these partial
program announcements only
encourage a stronger resolve.
