Health survey results released at LHIN forum
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Results from a health care survey as well
as information on the Integrated Health Care Network
and what it will mean for users of the system were dis-
cussed Monday morning in Exeter by politicians, health
officials and residents at a forum at the Exeter Town
Hall.
Attending the meeting were Huron Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell, as well as South West Local Health Integration
Network CEO Tony Woolgar and board member John
Van Bastelaar along with Ministry of Health MPP liaison
Scott Lovell, executive director of the Huron Perth
Community Care Access Centres Kathy Scalon and
Huron Perth director of client services Mary Lynn
Preistap.
Mitchell said the questionnaire was mailed to every
household in Huron Bruce, but added not every house-
hold received one, which was being looked into. 490
surveys were returned, which she described as "a very
good response."
Mitchell said while the tone of the surveys was positive
with many comments about excellent service received
and the quality of staff, users have concerns which
include the contracting out of services, closing rural hos-
pitals and travel times.
"We can't lose sight that respondents said the system
works, " said Mitchell.
Among the 490 responses, 388 said they have a family
physician; 400 said they have seen a doctor in the last
six months; 289 have used a community hospital in the
last six months, of which 297 said they used the emer-
gency room.
Asked if they have used a hospital outside their com-
munity, 342 said yes of which 202 went to London while
94 went to Stratford and 81 went to Owen sound.
Twenty five of the respondents said they are on a
cataract waiting list while 16 said they are waiting for
MRIs; 23 are waiting for hip and knee replacements and
29 were waiting for other types of surgery.
Referring to time on waiting lists, 16 respondents said
they had waited between one to three months while
nine people said their wait time had been between four
to six months and eight waited between 10 to 12
months.

Referring to the Trillium Drug Plan, 443 people said
they have used the plan and 389 of the respondents said
they have not used the telehealth phone service.
Just over half of those who responded were in the 67
and older category while 29 per cent were over 56 years
of age.
Woolgar praised Mitchell's work in having the survey
done and said it is exactly what the LHIN needs.
One problem Woolgar said that needs to be addressed
in medical care is "we use jargon people don't under-
stand."
He added that LHIN is intended to bring medical care
closer to where people need it saying that previously all
decisions were made at Queen's Park.
"It's about making sure people can travel less," said
Woolgar.
Van Bastellar echoed the sentiments of Woolgar, ask-
ing, "does Toronto know the needs of the local sys-
tem...before it was top down, with LHIN it is bottom up."
In response to a question whether the LHIN would
control money raised by hospital auxilaries Woolgar
said "LHIN is coming to work with the hospital not take
away from it."
The southwest LHIN board has six members and will
be add three more.
As well as Woolgar and Van Bastellar are chair Norm
Gamble from Seaforth; Anne Lake from Fullarton, vice -
chair Janet McEwen from London and Bob Habkirk
from Aylmer.
