Bearss' report
South Huron adult activi-
ties co-ordinator Jim
Bearss made his annual
report to council, updating
councillors on various pro-
jects he has been working
on over the year.
Bearss said he would
like to see either an apart-
ment or condo building
built for seniors in Exeter.
He said many people have
told him they would be
interested in such a devel-
opment in the downtown
area. Bearss has become
involved with the Huron
County Housing Coalition,
which holds regular meet-
ings and is working on a
housing study.
In addition to writing a
weekly column for the
Times -Advocate, Bearss
has organized three Adult
Trade Fairs in Exeter and
is working on a fourth,
slated for June 7 at South
Huron Rec Centre.
Bearss is also working
with a group to create
employment possibilities
for people over 50 years
old. He also works with
Faye Van Oss of the local
Welcome Wagon and pro-
vides material for her to
give to newcomers to the
area.
Bearss, who started his
volunteer role with the
municipality four years
ago, also requested remu-
neration, since he started
as a 10 hour a month vol-
unteer and the role has
grown much larger. He is
paid for mileage and
expenses.

Bearss' request and
reached no decision.
Robertson said Bearss is
doing a good job for
seniors in the area.
"I think it's a really
worthwhile thing."
However, council
expressed concern that by
paying Bearss, they would
be "opening up a whole
new can of works,"
according to Morley,
because other volunteers
might request remunera-
tion.
Council asked chief
administrative officer
Larry Brown to look into
the issue and report back
at a future meeting.
