Midgets in OMHA final
EXETER — The South Huron
Midgets had a successful week as
they won the Shamrock league 'A'
finals on Tuesday before advancing
to the OMI -IA finals by beating
Wellesley 5-2 Friday night in
Exeter.
South Huron will face
Campbellford in the final starting
March 18 in Exeter at 3 p.m.
Game two will be March 19 in
Campbellford, also at 3 p.m.
The Midgets entered the 16 team
Shamrock league playoff after fin-
ishing in third place with a 16-5-2
record.
South Huron defeated Lambeth,
Ilderton and Lucan before defeat-
ing Dorchester in the finals 2-1.
South Huron started OMHA play -
downs against Mt. Brydges and
defeated them three straight.
In the quarter -finals they went
against Harrow, defeating them on
the road three times to win the
series 3-1.
The semi-finals were against
Twin Centres which only lost one
league this season.
South Huron opened with an 8-7
overtime loss in Wellesley but
came home and won 2-0 March 4.
South Huron went back to
Wellesley March 9 and defeated
them 8-5 before finishing them off
Friday.
Assistant coach Bob Reschke said
strong goaltending and defence as
well as a powerful offence have
been the key to the success of the
team. South Huron has over 200
goals this year with a goals against
under 70.
Reschke added the team also has
a great coach in Lee Gibbings.

EXETER — The
South Huron Midget
AE Sabres advanced to
the OMHA finals after
eliminating Twin
Centers three games to
none last week.
They start the All -
Ontario final series on
the road against
Highland Storm with
game one in
Haliburton March 18
and game two in
Minden March 19.
Game three will be
back home March 25
and games four and
five if necessary will
also be at home March
26 and April 1.
The Exeter Figure Skating Club had about 30 skaters at the March 3-4 Future Stars
Unlimited skating competition at the Goderich Maitland Rec Centre. More than 500
skaters from across western Ontario competed, with coach Kathy McLlwain calling it a
successful, well run event. Most of the skaters were competing for the first time. Pictured

Irish advance with 4-1 win

LUCAN — The Lucan
Irish have advanced to
the Yeck conference
final with their second
straight playoff sweep,
as the Irish eliminated
the North Middlesex
Stars Sunday night
with a 4-1 win in
Lucan.
Lucan now advances
to face Thamesford
which eliminated Mt.
Brydges, also in four
games.
On the McConnell
conference side,
Tavistock held a 3-1
lead over Wellesley
with game five
Tuesday night while
Delhi leads Hagersville
3-0 with game four
tonight (Wednesday).
"We're playing our
best hockey right now
and seem to be getting
better with every
game," said Lucan
coach Jason Heywood.
The Irish needed a
come -from -behind win
in overtime March 7 in
game one of the series
after being down 3-1
after the first period
with Aaron Whitcomb
getting the lone goal of
the period for Lucan.
But a second period
goal from Jeff Silver
got the Irish back
within one goal before
Silver added his sec-
ond of the game in the
third to send it to over-
time where
Whitcomb
ended it at 4:38
to give the Irish
a 1-0 lead in
the series.
Wednesday
night in Lucan,
the Irish had a
2-0 lead after
the first minute
of play and
never looked

back on the way to a
6-1 win.
Whitcomb continued
to pace the Lucan
offence, opening the
scoring at 19:39 of the
first before Trevor
Liddle made it 2-0 40
seconds later.
Sean Davidson cut
the lead to 2-1 midway
through the first but
Shawn Williams
restored the two -goal
lead before the period
was over.
Liddle added his sec-
ond of the game in the
second period before
Matt Blane and Kyle
Smith put the game
away in the third with
two more goals.
After taking a 3-0
lead in the series with
a 6-3 win in Parkhill
Saturday night, the
Irish were looking to
put the Stars away
Sunday back in Lucan.
North. Middlesex
stayed close for two
periods with Bob
Martin giving Lucan a
1-0 lead in the second
period.
But a pair of goals a
minute apart for
Lucan put the game
away as Jeremy
Montag and Jeff
McLean gave the Irish
a 3-0 lead.
Jason Thompson got
the Stars on the score-
board at 8:16 of the
period but Silver
sealed the win two
minutes later.
