The Times Advocate, 2006-03-15, Page 16Wednesday, March 15, 2006 Exeter Times -Advocate 15 Paint Ontario kicks off ninth year with presentation By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND - The annual Paint Ontario art show is under way for the ninth year, with organizers pleased about the exhibit's continued growth. Paint Ontario kicked off its ninth show with an awards pre- sentation and reception at the L ambton H eritage Museum Friday night. The show continues seven days a week until April 2. Show founder and Grand Bend artist Barry Richman is impressed with the quality of this year's show, which has art represented from 90-100 artists. "They raise the bar every year," Richman says of the artists. This is the sec- ond year the show has been called Paint Ontario; in pre- vious years it was called Paint the Huron S h o r e s. Richman says the new name allowed the show to expand. In one year, he said entries into the show are up 50 per cent and artists from as far away as Ottawa and Toronto are submitting work. There is also plenty of local represen- tation, Richman said. Richman wants the art in Paint Ontario to represent a complete cross- section of life in Ontario and for that reason he would like to see more paintings of urban set- tings and street scenes. This year's show does include some industrial scenes. Prizes award- ed included: Michael Smith of Kitchener (Best in Show, for his painting "Bradley Harbour"), Josy Britton of Grand Bend (2nd for "Maple Sky") and honourable mentions to Gwen Card of Appin and Dennis Kalichuck of St. Thomas. Fran Roelands of Ailsa Craig took home the Juror's Award and the People's Choice Award. The show also added four pur- chase awards this year: The Suncoast Consultants award went to Laura Woermke School-based child care moves ahead By Stew Slater SPECIAL TO THE T -A SEAFORTH - Federal government money has already flowed through Ontario's provincial gov- ernment and on to munic- ipalities, aimed at imple- menting a national day- care program which was introduced by the former Liberal government but is now very much in danger of being eliminated by the recently -elected Conservatives. As a result of the new government's threats to replace the program, what was once a plan to establish childcare "hubs" in various communities is in jeopardy. Money for what's known as Stage 1, however, is intact, so administrators of Huron and Perth counties' Best Start initiative are forging ahead with plans for school-based childcare. Geoff Williams, director of education for the Avon Maitland District School Board, serves on the Best Start committee and pro- vided trustees with an update at a regular board meeting Feb. 14. He explained Stage 1 funding is guaranteed until March 2007, and is being put mainly towards creating new licensed daycare spaces, particularly to serve students who attend Junior and Senior Kindergarten part-time (either successive half - days or alternating full days). He said the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board, which is also involved with Best Start, has more spaces available in its elementary schools than the Avon Maitland board, for such program- ming. However, within the Avon Maitland board, the Best Start committee has chosen to make renova- tions at St. Marys Central Public School, Avon Public School in Stratford, Mitchell Public School and Victoria Public School in Goderich. Work is expected to begin in St. Marys next month, converting an existing empty Kindergarten room and constructing an additional washroom. Work at the other three sites will take place over the summer. Also in the Avon Maitland board, there are existing licensed daycare centres immediately adja- cent to Exeter Public School and Seaforth Public School, so Best Start money will be used there instead of inside the schools. Although arrangements with the existing daycare providers in those six communities have not yet been finalized, Williams said programming is expected to begin in September 2006. Trustees supported a resolution, brought for- ward by Stratford repre- sentative Doug Pratley, to send a letter to the federal government urging it to reconsider its plan to eliminate national daycare funding. g of St. Thomas, the Grand Bend Healthy Lifestyles award went to Richman of Grand Bend, the Industrial Parts award went to Teresa Jeromkin of Grand Bend and the Founder's award went to Cathy Groulx of Woodstock. Richman said the show grows every year and he will plan something spe- cial for the 10th anniversary next year. Hours for the show are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ninth annual Paint Ontario art exhibit kicked off Friday night at the Lambton Heritage Museum and continues until April 2.
